VOA Special English -  What do we learn English for?

We try very hard to master English,but what for.
I used to treat it as the best way to learn more about the world, so I chosed English as my major.
However, I found myself trapped in countless exams and learn on more .What do we get during cramming our head with words , playing the tapes over and over again?
These learnning maybe a waste of time . If we do not improvement our English a great deal after two years' hard work , who should be to blame for? We go into the deviating directoin and not strike the core .
