句子结构分析及理解

Hendrix, though, has emerged as enough of a pace-setter for the modern campus tour that administrators from as far away as Bennington College in Vermont have traveled to Arkansas to see the program.

And yet, Hendrix considers its tour strategy so proprietary that when a direct competitor that it would not name — a college that, like Hendrix, is featured in the book “Colleges That Change Lives” recently asked if it could send a delegation on a tour, the request was turned down.

It is one of several dozen colleges and universities that are increasingly directing their tour guides to turn around and walk forward, and to purge their memories of all those dates from the college’s history in favor of personal anecdotes and frequent breaks for give-and-take

enough of 理解为一个形容词修饰pace-setter.  后边that引导一个状语从句,表结果。

整句是说Hendrix作为现代校园旅行方式的先驱崭露头脚,引来远方的参观者。

"that it would not name" 可以当它是插入语。破折号间部分可以理解为定语。去掉这些再看:when a direct competitorrecently asked if it could send a delegation on a tour, the request was turned down

was turned down 被拒绝。

整句句意思是Hendrix认为它的tour strategy是私有专利不让人看。

3....and to purge their memories of all those dates from the college’s history 【in favor of personal anecdotes and frequent breaks for give-and-take】

in favor of 引导一个状语。

这句说的是:整肃这些导游们(tour guides)仅仅能干巴巴背诵校史年代记录的现状,要多给游客介绍名人趣闻,多沟通互动。

豁然开朗!谢谢!但我还有一个问题,快开学了,在上学期间,由于每天任务很重,不可能坚持每天一篇地道时文阅读,而且我也不知道到哪里找地道的英文报纸之类的读,并且像New York time这种生词量较多的查字典也很浪费时间。

所以,我觉的每天拿出一点时间做几篇阅读理解题比较现实,但这样做是否有利于我预期目标的实现,我很怀疑,所以我想问一下我这样做是否可行,或许有更好一些的建议。请指点。

长文看起来太累可以看短的;难词太多就挑相对简单的;一天一篇做不到,可以一周一篇,甚至几周一篇也好。一年下来就相当于比别人多学一册教材,而且是权威的教材,其语言的运用比你课本中的文章都地道。

做阅读理解有一个问题,就是来源不明。谁都可以編一本题集,但文章怎么来的就没有说明了,天知道是谁写的,要知道,即使是英国人美国人,很多人写出的文章语言都不一定是通顺规范的,更不用说国内未必真的学通英文的很多老师、教授了。而且作为学生你也分不出是English还是Chinglish,分不出是好的英文还是坏的英文,甚至干脆就是错的英文。这种文章,当题目来做自然是没有问题,理解它在说什么,把题目做对就好了。但当作学习材料的话,就怕你一字一句、认证研读了一段文章之后,学到的却是错误的表述,那就贻害无穷了。这样的话,学的越认真岂不越倒霉?所以学语言的学习材料一定要地道。什么英文地道?英美主流报刊杂志上的文章一定地道。

国内想买纸质的国外报纸杂志确实比较费事,网络浏览是惯常的做法。如果不能长时间用电脑,那就挑好文章打印出来好了,花不了几毛钱。
