Background:
When Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping visits the United States next week, he will visit the small city of Muscatine in the Midwestern state of Iowa. In 1985, he visited the city and stayed in the homes of several residents 。 Xi received warm welcome there. Sarah Lande, whose home was one of those visited by the Chinese official in 1985, will be hosting a tea for Xi next Wednesday in her home. She told the reporter as the following:

He’s coming to visit us because we hosted him in 1985 on a sister-state exchange program. At that time, he was the director of a feed institute in Hebei and came to Muscatine as I said as a part of that sister-state exchange. One reason, because we had some industries that he wanted to see, he wanted to learn to improve technology, to be more efficient in their production of corn and grain and be able to feed his people better in an increasing standard of living.

Well, let me tell you. I’ve been a student of China of my own reading of China. In 1984, our governor Terry Branstead who’s our governor again signed a sister-state agreement with Hebei Province of the People’s Republic of China. There was an article that paper said “Would anybody want to join that committee?”. I said “Yes” so I was a member of the committee.

Also this governor who was head of this committee led an early friendship forest from Iowa to China in 1984. And I appreciated of doing that. And then as a result of the committee that tripped to China, and because we had the sister-state relationship which was easy to get these back and forth and each country could say “Well, I’d like to do this.”. Maybe as a vice president now said “Well, I’d like to learn about agriculture technology.” And we might say “Well, we’d like to learn your education and the art.” So I cheered for a plenty of works. So when there was a group wanting agriculture because I’ve been to China and I was on that committee, we said “Come, bring the group to Muscatine”.

(How did you guys get to know each other? Just through the visit? And how well do you think you know him?)

You know, not into mentally a personal sense, but as he was the leader of the delegation and you know our goal was to increase the friendship and exchange between countries, so both sides were eager to make this exchange work.

(What do you think he learned about the United States and what did you learn about China?)

I think that he was warmly received. You know we call it the Iowa nice here. But when we brought him into our homes for dinner, he just he met with our everyday people in the home where he stayed in the home stay, he was in the kid’s bedrooms and he started to track on the wall. And I think people were eager to see him but I think they just treated him like he was one of us, one of the family.

So I think he was, maybe surprised how warmly we received them. And I believe at that time if you were hosted in China, you usually stayed at hotel. Maybe their homes weren’t really set up for guests. But he just was taken in by the families along the way. And we took him a ride on the Mississippi River where we are. He visited a farm he was interested in. I think he was impressed with the technology we had here. And there was one quote that he said “It was very lucky for me to visit the beautiful Muscatine and made many American friends.”

What we learned from him, what we learned a little bit more about his family about you know the industry, what his goals were like. Maybe we both really learned about each other’s cultures. And if you do that, it’s a real rich experience. So there was just so much said in our day to day. We’ve been too busy to think about China. So we were eager to have him at our home and have a sort of talk to him. The best we can do to get him understanding of sort of what Chinese people were like, you know, any stereo types we had. You know where they were a part of the Communist States. Yes, they were. But they were very nice human people with families and goals to feed their communities and country also.

(With him set the type of rings of the Chinese government, do you think this pertains the positive development for U.S-Chinese relationship?)

Oh, I certainly do. I’m such a believer that people getting to know and understand each other’s cultures while wanting to work to cooperate. So I do believe that one of the examples that I have here one of the hopes I have is that we can really be an example to our country and Chinese country of how building friendship and working and trading and cooperation can bring good rewards, a win-win for both sides.
