At the same time Israel's ground, air and naval forces continue to attack Hamas targets in the Gaza strip. People who live there say the clashes took place in the crowded neighborhood of Cigija. Medical officials in Gaza say more than 550 people have died since the offensive began ten days ago. They say another 2500 have been wounded. Israel reports one soldier was killed in the ground offensive and at least 30 others wounded. Hamas has continued to fire rockets into southern Israel, killing four Israelis. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the Israeli attacks will continue until communities in southern Israel are safe from Hamas' rocket attacks. Arab governments have urged the United Nations Security Council to order an end to Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority's Foreign Minister says the governments will propose a permanent cease fire with an international force to protect civilians. They are also calling for observers along the boarder. French president Nicolas Sarkozy has told Israelis that the violence must stop. But at the same time he condemned Hamas for its rocket and mortar attacks against Israel. India has given evidence to Pakistan about the deadly attacks in Mumbai in November. India says the evidence shows that the attackers were Pakistanis . India also presented the evidence to the United States and several other countries. India wants these countries to pressure Pakistan to take stronger action against terrorists. Pakistan says it is looking at the evidence. Its Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi met in Islamabad with American diplomat Richard Doucher . He said India and Pakistan must work together. He also said Pakistan is taking action against terrorists. A human rights group says it is concerned that rebels in southern Thailand are changing their methods and may use more car bombs. Human Rights Watch representative Sunai Pasuk says more car bombings were reported during the last part of 2008. The group expects that development to continue this year. The rebels belong to several different groups including Islamist extremists who observers say have not yet made their demands clear. They target public officials, teachers, religious workers and other civilians. Drive-by shootings and roadside bombings take place regularly. Human rights groups also accuse the Thai army of abuses, including illegal killings and forced disappearances of suspected millitants. Rescue workers in Guatemala are searching for victims of a massive landslide that covered a road in the northern part of the country Sunday. At least 33 people were killed and 15 others were injured. Officials report many are missing. The incident took place when part of the mountain collapsed in the state of Alta Verapaz about 200 kilometers from Guatemala City. Millions of kilograms of earth and rock crashed down onto the road which was being used by day laborers returning home from work. Venezuela's Texas based oil company Sitgo has suspended a program to provide heating oil to hundreds of thousands of poor American families. The program gave fuel from Venezuela’s president Hugo Chavez's government to homes in 23 states. Citizens Energy, a nonprofit company runs the program. It is headed by former American congressman Joseph Kennedy. In a statement he said falling oil prices and the world economic crisis led to the decision to suspend the program. There was no comment from Sitgo. Critics of the program said it was a plot by President Chavez to make President Bush look bad. A French company says sea robbers of the coast of Nigeria have seized one of its ships and nine crew members. The naval services company Bourbon said the ship was seized late Saturday or early Sunday. A company news release says representatives spoke with the Captain by telephone. He says the crew is in good health. The ship's crew includes five Nigerians, two Ghanaians, a Cameroonian and an Indonesian. Most attacks by sea robbers in African waters take place in the east of the coast of Somalia. But such attacks have increased in Nigeria over the last two years.
