VOA Special English -- THE MAKING OF A NATION主题背景音乐是《Hail, Columbia》（嗨！哥伦比亚），由约瑟夫．霍普金森（JOSEPH HOPKINSON）创作为。1798年4月25日在费城一家剧院首次演唱《嗨！哥伦比亚》时，听衆报以热烈的掌声和欢呼。其曲调是套用爲华盛顿总统第一次就职典礼而作的《总统进行曲》的曲调。原来的题目爲《爱的新联邦之歌──改编爲总统进行曲》，但在一年之内，又重新题名爲《嗨！哥伦比亚》。歌的第四节开头就直接向新当选的约翰．亚当斯总统表示致敬。歌纸上印着亚当斯的头像，环绕头像的是这样一句话：“瞧，这是现在统帅我们的领袖。”反联邦主义的报纸嘲笑这首歌是吹捧一个主张君主制的政党，但它很快风靡全国，国人以极大的爱国热情欢迎它。在1931年，胡佛总统宣布《星条旗》爲国歌前约一百年里，《嗨！哥伦比亚》与《星条旗》一直竞争当国歌。
