At least 24 resistance fighters have been killed in eastern Afghanistan by NATO and Afghan forces. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization says the rebels fired machine guns and rockets at 2 American military bases early Saturday morning. A Taliban spokesman said about 30 militants were involved in the attack. A VOA reporter says the attack leader was killed as he tried to escape to Pakistan. General David Petraeus told reporters Saturday that militant groups remain a problem because they are able to hide in Pakistan. The general is the top United States military commander in Afghanistan.
