A Princess of Mars

"A Princess of Mars" by Edgar Rice Burroughs first appeared in six parts in All-Story magazine in 1911. The science fiction story was published as "Under the Moons of Mars." Six years later, in 1917, Chicago publisher A.C. McClurg Company printed Burrough's story in book form. The company reportedly published just over 10,000 copies, under the name "A Princess of Mars."

Artist Frank E. Schoonover created five pictures for the book, as well as its cover. One of the images, reproduced (with some color changes) at right, is called "Battle With White Apes." The original oil painting measures 86 centimeters by 60 centimeters. It hangs in the Free Library of Philadelphia.
