WORLD NEWS – June 8th, 2009

It is twenty-three hours thirty universal time. I’m Howard Nuberk in Washington.

Lebanon ’s Pro-western Coalition has claimed victory in parliamentary elections. Parliamentary majority leader Saad Al-Hariri announced the victory over a Hezbollah-led alliance supported by Syria and Iran. Mr. Hariri said there were no winners or losers in the election, but he said the only winners were Lebanon and democracy. It is unclear how many seats were won by each Coalition. Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said at least fifty-two percent of registered voters took part in the elections. Only forty-five took part in the last Lebanese parliamentary elections in 2005.

European Union election officials say earlier results show that Conservative Parties will control as many as two hundred seventy-three seats in the more than seven hundred member Parliament. These first results show that the Conservatives leading in the some of the EU’s top economies including Germany, France, Italy and Spain. European Parliament officials say only a small number of people voted in the four-day election for a new Parliament. Officials estimate that about forty-three percent of registered voters took part. Opinions studies taken before the election showed that many voters blamed EU leaders for doing too little to stop the world economic crisis.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United State is considering putting North Korea back on a list of nations of support terrorism. She said officials are thinking about it because of North Korea’s recent nuclear and missile tests. Ms Clinton said the tests were very aggressive and are forcing the Obama Administration to reconsider their policies. And she says the United States is working with the United Nations on a resolution to ban North Korean arms shipments. North Korea was taken off the terrorism list last October after agreeing to some measures linked to its nuclear program.

Officials in Pakistan say hundreds of villagers have attacked suspected Taliban positions to answer a deadly bombing. An official in the Upper Dir area says about five hundred people from the area formed a militia( 民兵 ) Sunday. He says that they have killed at least seven Taliban fighters and destroyed twenty homes where Taliban fighters were known to stay. The officials said that the militia has occupied three villages. On Friday, a suicide bomber attacked an Islamic religious center in Upper Dir and at least thirty-eight people were killed.

President Obama has returned to Washington from a visit to the Middle East and Europe. This week is expected to work on a health care reform. Obama Administration official David Axelrod said on American television that the President would like to sign a health care reform bill into law later this year. Mr. Obama wants to expand the health care to the fifteen million Americans who are without health insurance.

The Brazilian military says seventeen bodies have been found in the Atlantic Ocean from the Air France passenger airplane that crashed May 31st. The military said wreckages from the plane also have been found in the water off Brazil’s northeastern coast. The plane was carrying two hundred twenty-eight people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris when it went down. French investigators say it is too earlier to tell what caused the plane to crash in stormy weather, but they are considering the possibility that the plane’s air speed devices may not have worked correctly.

The major of Paris has announced honoring citizenship of Tibet’s exiles spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. The Paris City Council voted in April to give the Dalai Lama this honor after China violently attacked protesters in Tibet. China warned the City of Paris last month not to give the award. The Dalai Lama arrived in Paris Saturday and he accused China of placing a death sentence on Tibet. He also expressed the belief that Tibet’s history and culture are in danger under Chinese rule. France is the final stop on the Dalai Lama’s visit to Europe. He already has visited Denmark, Iceland the Netherlands.

Mexican officials say two soldiers and fifteen gunmen have been killed during hours of battle in the vacation town of Akapulko. Military officials say the gunmen opened fire and threw small bombs at soldiers after they surrounded their house Saturday night. Officials have not identified the gunmen, but much of the violence currently troubling Mexico is linked to the illegal drug trade. The violence has killed more than seven thousand people since the beginning of 2008.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will soon give a speech about his plan for Middle East peace. Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet that he will work toward with the Palestinians and Arab countries, and he will try to reach understandings with the United States. President Obama has urged Israel to stop buildings in its settlements in the West Bank. He described such activities as “a barrier to peace”. Palestinians want the West Bank for a future state.

And this news. For the first time in thirty years, citizens of Saudi Arabia brought pop corns to eat and watched movie at a theater in the capital Riyadh. However, no women were permitted to attend the showing of the Saudi movie Manahi on Saturday. Religiously Conservative protesters demonstrated against the event. They tried to influence people not to go inside the theater. The government of Saudi Arabia began to close theatres about thirty years ago and Conservatives of Saudi believe activities like movies and music shows could lead to the mixing of men and women and violate the Islamic values.
