WORLD NEWS – June 27th, 2009

In the news of this day, President Barack Obama has condemned recent violence against protesters that followed Iran’s presidential election. Mr. Obama spoke at the White House on Friday during talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Mr. Obama said the Iranian people have the right to gather peacefully and to speak freely. Earlier in Italy Foreign Ministers from the world’s main industrialized countries condemned the violence. Groups of Iranians visited the burial place of a young woman protester named Neda. They say Iranian security forces killed her during the protests.

Officials in Iraq say that at least sixteen people were killed in two bombings at Baghdad on Friday. The first bomb exploded in a crowded vehicle market in central Baghdad. Officials said explosives were hidden on small two-wheeled vehicle or motorcycle. In a separate attack in western Baghdad, another motorcycle filled with explosives killed one person and wounded three others. The attacks come just four days before United States forces are to leave Iraqi cities.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan area of Iraq says a central government plan to sell six oil fills violates the constitution. Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani expressed concern about two oil fills in territory claimed both by the Kurds and the central Iraqi government. He says any decision about oil fills requires agreement between Federal officials and the affected areas. Iraq’s government has rejected agreements that the Kurdish area reached independently with oil companies.

Lebanon ’s President Michel Suleiman is expected to name Saad Hariri as Prime Minister. Mr. Suleiman will meet with lawmakers on Saturday before officially announcing the decision. Mr. Hariri leads a pro-western party that won elections earlier this month. He and Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah have agreed to cooperate to form a unity government. However, Mr. Hariri has rejected letting the Hezbollah alliance keep the vital power that it has had in the last cabinet. A coalition led by Hezbollah has the second largest number of seats in Lebanon’s Assembly. The leaders agreed to continue discussions as they form the new government.

In the United States, an official with Los Angles medical examiners’ office says tests were performed on Friday on the body of singer & dancer Michael Jackson. The officials said that the first results did not approve a cause of death. However the tests did prove there is no criminal activity involved in his death. The official said more tests will be needed and could be to ready in six to eight weeks. On Friday, people around the world mourn the death of the singer. Some broadcast media stopped their usual programming to play songs he made famous. Many people have been sending comments to internet websites. Fans are holding dance parties in the streets and lawmakers in the US House of Representatives honored him.

Officials in Mexico say a gun battle between suspected drug criminals and Mexican security forces has killed twelve people. Mexican officials said on Friday that suspected drug members shot the police and soldiers during a raid in the central state of Guanajuato. Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón has sent thousands of troops across the country to try to stop the criminal violence, but the violence has increased with more than seven thousand deaths since the beginning of last year.

Honduras President José Manuel Zelaya continues to gather support for his support to change the constitution so that he can run for president again. Government supporters began handing out ballots on Friday for a planned Sunday vote on changing the constitution. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that Mr. Zelaya’s planned national vote on the mending constitution is illegal. On Thursday the Supreme Court ordered election officials to remove all voting materials from a Teigosigao air force, but Mr. Zelaya says no one can stop the vote.

The United Nations Refugee Agency says that those fleeing violence and poverty in Somalia have created the world’s largest refugee camp in Kenya. The UNHCR says that more than two hundred and eighty thousand people live in the camp in the Dadaab Kenya, most of them are Somalis. A UN official said on Friday that thirty-eight thousand refugees have arrived at the camp since January.

And the United Nations special representative to Burma is in that country for talks about a possible visit by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Ibrahim Gambari met with Foreign Minister Nyan Win on Friday in the capital Nabidao. It is not clearly if Mr. Gambari will meet the country’s political opposition. Mr. Ban is said to visit Japan from June 30th to July 2nd and could then go on to visit Burma.
