In the news of the day, Saad Hariri has been named the new Prime Minister of Lebanon. President Michel Suleiman appointed appointed Mr. Hariri on Saturday after a majority of lawmakers nominated him. Mr. Hariri promised to end the political dispute that the country has suffered since 2007. That dispute lead to the worst dispute fighting since Lebanon’s civil war ended nineteen years ago. The new Prime Minister spoke at the President’s official home. Mr. Hariri is the son of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri who was killed in 2005.

The Prime Minister of Iraq says that the planned Americans withdrawal from Iraqi cities shows the world that Iraq can protect itself. Nouri al-Maliki called for national unity. He said Sunni Arab and Shiite Muslim groups must cooperate to provide security for the nation. United Forces are to leave Iraqi cities at the end of this month. On Friday President Obama said security in Iraq has improved but he noted a recent increase in violence. At least sixteen people were killed on Friday in two separate attacks in Baghdad.

Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Moussavi has rejected a government proposal to recount some ballots from presidential election. Mr. Moussavi questioned the fairness of the proposed group that wouldl perform the recount. His comments were reported on his website. Iran’s Guardian Council offered to recount ten percent of the ballots from the June 12th votes. The ballots will be chosen by chance. Opposition supporters say the election was unfair.

In Northern Ireland, three pro-British groups say they will disarm under independent supervision. The three groups are the Ulster Volunteer Force, the Ouster Defense Association and the Red Hand Commandos. The Ulster Defense Association said that the struggle has ended and the need for armed resistance has gone. Representatives of the other two groups said they had completed the process of making their military equipment unusable. The British and Irish government confirmed the disbarment announcement.

The United States is changing the way it fights illegal drug trading in Afghanistan. The special diplomat for Afghanistan and Pakistan made the announcement on Saturday. Richard Holbrooke told foreign ministers at the group-of-eight meeting in Italy that efforts to destroy in Afghanistan cops have wasted hundreds of millions of dollars. He said the United States seized the Taliban as the enemy and not the farmers who grow the poppy crops and agricultural development that is to say, he said the United States will spend money to support legal crops and agricultural development. Taliban rebels help pay for their attacks with trade in illegal drugs made from the poppy plant.

Pakistani officials said they prevented a possible terrorist attack in the city of Karaqi. The officials said on Saturday that police offers killed five suspected militants linked to Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud. The killings reportedly took place after police were told that militants were acting Nicro refugees. The police said that they seized a lot of weapons and emulations but the two suspected militants escaped.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Russia have agreed to have military ties again. The agreement came at a meeting of NATO and Russian foreign ministers in Greece. The head of the alliance Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the NATO-Russia Council can operate again, but the alliance and Russia failed to settle major differences caused by Russia’s war with Georgia. Also on Saturday, America’s military chief Admiral Micheale Mollen urged Russian officers to help move their country’s relations with the United States to a new level.

President Obama says a new clean energy bill will help create new jobs and ease America’s dependence foreign oil. The President urged the Senate to support the bill which he called “herrority”, that is, historic. The United States House of Representatives passed the measure on Friday. The bill presses for new forms of energy. It also limits the amount of gases like carbon dioxide that can be released in the air. The Republican Party leader in House of Representatives criticized the bill. Representative John Boehner compared the plan to “an energy tax”.

And people in Argentina will vote on Sunday to elect half the lower House of the Congress and one third of the second. Recent opinion studies show a close vote. The ruling Peronist Party appears to be losing many seats in both Houses of the congress. Some observers say the elections will test power of President Cristina Fernandez. She is married to Argentina’s former President Nestor Kirchner. Mr. Kirchne is competing for a congressional seat in Argentina’s biggest province Buenos Aires. If he defeats Fernandez‘s group businessman Francisco de Narvaez, it will help strengthen his wife’s control over the congress.
