Hundreds of American Marines and Afghan soldiers have attacked a Taliban held area in Southern Afghanistan. The attack is said to be a part of new operation to gain control of the area before the country’s presidential election next week. Military forces were carried by helicopter to the Nawzad area of Helmand Province to begin "Operation Eastern Resolve 2."  An American Defense Department spokesman says there will be more operations like this one in the coming days and they will not stop after the elections. American officials said they want to make sure election officials and Afghan national security forces have in their words “the security to do their jobs.”

Reports from Northwestern Pakistan say Taliban Militants attacked a Tribal Malaysia that supports Pakistani government. Witnesses and government officials say the attack led to intense fighting near South Waziristan. Many people were believed to have been killed in the fighting. The reports can not be independently confirmed because news reporters are unable to reach the area.

Gunmen have attacked an Islamic Center in the Puntland area of Somalia. They killed at least 5 religious leaders visiting from Pakistan. Witnesses say the gunmen forced the clergymen out of the Tawfiq Mosque in Galkayo and then shot them nearby. Five of them died, two others were wounded. No one has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The United States says it does not know the exact area where three American hikers are been detaining in Iran. The three were detaineed after crossing the border from Northern Iraq. An American State Department spokesman says officials have asked the Swiss Embassy in Tehran where the three are been held. The spokesman says American officials want to communicate with the three detainees as soon as possible. The spokesman said the three accidently crossed the border and they called for Iran to release them.

Lawyers for detained Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi say they are preparing to appeal a court’s ruling against. On Tuesday Aung San Suu Kyi was found guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest. One of the lawyers, Nyan Win, says they will appeal the ruling after getting an official copy of the court sentence. They are also seeking more information about the terms of Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest. Lawyers met with her for about an hour at her home in Rangoon Wednesday. A Burmese court found the opposition leader guilty of illegally permitting an American to stay at her home in May after he swam where uninvited. The court sentenced her to another 18 months of house arrest.

United States Central Bank officials say they will start to slow a government program to support the economy. The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it will slow plans to buy $300 billion in United States Treasury bonds. The program was aimed at lowering interest rates. The Federal Reserve also said it will keep an important short-term interest rate near zero for an extended period of time to support bank lending. The United States Treasury said Wednesday that the federal deficit has risen to $1.27 trillion.

American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is urging Nigeria to do more to fight corruption and work toward political reform. Ms. Clinton spoke in Abuja Wednesday. She said the future of Nigeria depends on good government, the ruled law and fighting corruption. She said the United States wants to help Nigeria support democracy. She said the two countries are planning a committee to discuss issues including voting reform and violence of Niger Delta. Hillary Clinton made the comments after meeting with Nigerian President and Foreign Minister.

The Indian government is closing schools, colleges and movie theaters in Mumbai in an effort to stop the spread of the H1N1 Swine Flu Virus. Officials say the closings will last for one week beginning Thursday. The move will affect an estimated 1,100 schools in the city. 11 of the country's 15 deaths from swine flu have taken place in Maharashtra state which includes Mumbai.

A report says Indian ground water is been used up faster than it is been replaced by rain water. The report was published Wednesday in Nature Magazine. It says too much water is been taken from the ground as a result of population growth, farming and development. The report considers three states in northwest India between 2002 and 2008. It says water level droped by about 4 cm a year. Study says these areas may now suffer severe water shortages and have a fewer crops.

A new government report says the United States Space Agency does not have enough money to find space rocks that could destroy life on earth. The National Academy of Sciences said Wednesday that Congress has not given NASA the money it needs to build telescopes. The telescopes will be used to search the skies for asteroids that threaten to strike the earth. Congress passed a law in 2005 ordering NASA to find 90 percent of asteroids bigger than 140 kilometers. The reports says NASA can not meet this goal under its current budget. The report notes that the United States is the only country in the world that has a program to watch asteroids that could threaten the earth.
