WORLD NEWS – October 4th, 2009

And so you have found us here once again at VOA special English at 00:30 universal time in the news of this day

Officials in Indonesia say that at least 3,000 people may still be trapped in wreckage for the powerful earthquake that hit on Wednesday. The quake severely damaged the port city of Padang. The United Nations says more than 1,000 people died as a result of the 7.6 level earthquake. Rescue teams are struggling to reach victims in and around Padang. Large buildings including hospitals and religious centers were destroyed by the earthquake. In rural areas outside the city some villages have been completely destroyed by landslides. Officials say that more than 600 people have been buried in the landslides.

Officials in Southern India say that the number of death from days of heavy rains and flooding has risen to at least 194. The officials say that at least 145 people died in the state of Karnataka. Others died in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh. Army troops and Air force helicopters there were rescuing families and providing emergency supplies. The officials warned that the number of the death is likely to increase. Rescuers can not reach many areas affected by the flooding. Hundreds of thousands of people already have fled the area.

The United States Treasury Secretary said that world wide financial conditions especially in United States have improved greatly. But Timothy Geithner warned that the recovery is just beginning. He said recessions caused by financial crisis traditionally are deeper and more destructed. Mr. Geithner spoke on Saturday to a meeting in "The Istanbul of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank” that is hold in the city of Istanbul.   

In Venezuela about 2,000 people have marched in the capital Caracas. The marchers are protesting what they seek as "worsening human rights" in the country. They called on the Organization of the American States to investigate government treatment of the opponents of President Hugo Chavez. The demonstrators urged the OAS to investigate the trials and in prisons of opposition members. Earlier this year the American State Department criticized Venezuela for what they said “aggressive treatment of the opposition and the media”. The agency reports said that the Venezuela has an “unfair judicial system” and there is a “wide spread corruptions”.

United Nations’ nuclear Chief Mohamed ElBaradei has arrived in Iran. Mr. ElBaradei’s goal is to open at once secret nuclear center to international inspectors. Hours before his arrival Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defended Iran’s actions. The President said that Iran never try to hide the existence of the nuclear center which is near the city of Qom. He accused the United States of “making a big mistake”. United States and other allies have criticized Iran for trying to keep the nuclear center secret. Mohamed ElBaradei has said that Iran was on the wrong site of the law for the telling about center earlier.

Officials in Afghanistan say that an Afghan security officer fired on American troops during a joining operation in Wardak Province. The attack killed 2 soldiers and wounded 2 others. Officials say the shooting took place late on Friday. The reason for the shooting is not clear. Separately NATO says that 2 American soldiers died on Friday in a bomber attack in Southern Afghanistan. Another died of bomb wounds in Eastern Afghanistan. NATO also said that the Afghan and the International forces killed several Militants and detained others during raids in Paktika and Kandahar Provinces.

Iraqi security forces have arrested more than 150 people in the northern city of Mosul. Officials said that the raids began several days ago. The official said that the attacks are aimed that Sunni fighters, Al-Qaida Terrorists and members of the Baath Party of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The officials said that the suspects will be moved to Bagdad for questioning. Militants have made Mosul one of the main targets in the fight to gain influence. Civilians often are under the attacks there.

And two top Nigerian militant leaders and hundreds of their fighters have surrendered their weapons as part of the government’s amnesty deal. Militant commanders Ateke Tom and Farah Dagogo handed over rocket launchers, machine guns and other weapons on Saturday. The ceremony took place in the city of Port Harcourt. Ateke Tom leads the Niger Delta Vigilante. A third militant leader Government Ekpemupolo accepted the government pardon on Saturday. Mr. Ekpemupolo met with Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua. Mr. Yar'Adua has offered pardons to any Niger Delta militants who agree to surrender arms and end violence before the time limited on Sunday.
