It is 00:30 universal time and here is the news in special English

Medical workers in Somali’s capital say at least 24 people have been killed in what is been called “the worse of terrorist battle” in months. About 60 others were reported wounded. Witnesses say the battle began when resistant fighters fired shells at the International Airport in Mogadishu. They said the shells landed as Somali President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed was preparing to travel to Uganda. The President was not hurt. The witnesses said African Union Peacekeeping Forces fired back hitting a busy market. But an AU official denied that the forces fired at the market. He blamed the resistant fighters for the shelling.

Iraqi police say security forces have arrested at least 8 suspected members of Al-Qaida in northern Iraq. Local police chief Jamal Taher told reporters that the suspects including a woman were detained during a raid in the city of Kirkut. Mr. Taher says Iraqi forces also seized bombes during the operation. In other news the United States military says Iraqi police destroyed a supply of weapons and captured a suspected near al-Shakart, south of the city of Mosul. The suspects were believed to be linked to a group of bombers.

Two American Senators are calling on President Obama to officially recognize the killings of more than one million Armenians as genocide. Armenians say the killings between 1915 and 1923 were a result of a campaign by Ottoman Turks. Senator John Ensign and Senator Robert Menendez announced a resolution Wednesday. Senator Ensign wrote that it is hard to believe that years later the international community has not yet recognized the torture and killings as genocide. He said that by officially recognizing that genocide the United States will send a strong massage that it will not ignore crimes of the past. In a speech this year President Obama called the killings “one of the greatest offences of the 20th century”. He did not use the word “genocide”. But he promised during his campaign that if elected he will recognize the killings as “genocide”.

Iran’s Interior Minister is expected to visit Pakistan on Friday. Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar is expected to discuss ways to target the Sunni Muslim militant group that carried out a deadly suicide bombing in northeastern Iran on Sunday. Iranian state operated TV says Mr. Najjar will lead a large security delegation to Islamabad for talks with Pakistani officials. The militant group Jundallah claims responsibility for the attack. The bombing killed at least 57 people including members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Iranian officials say the militants are based in Pakistan. Iran is calling for Pakistan to turn over Jundallah’s leader Abdolmalek Rigi.

The United States says more than 300 people have been arrested in the past two days in a campaign against illegal drug dealers. American Attorney General Eric Holder said the raids were part of a 44-month operation known as “Project Coronado” which involved 19 states. Officials say the campaign was directed against Mexican drug group La Familia. La Familia is a major supplier of Cocaine and other drugs in the United States. The group is based in southwestern Mexico and has spread northwest. Officials say agents have seized illegal drugs, weapons, vehicles and over $3 million in the past two days.

You are listening to the news in VOA special English

The United Nations Secretary General says he is saddened by the killing of a UN Peacekeeper while he visited his home in Pakistan. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his sadness to the family of Brigadier General Ahmed Moinuddin. Two gunmen on a motorcycle attacked Mr. Moinuddin’s vehicle. He and his driver were killed. Mr. Moinuddin was a member of a UN Peacekeeping Forces in Sudan for the past five months. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But the Chief of Islamabad police blamed Taliban extremists. He said officials are searching for the gunmen.

President Obama has spoken with the American ambassador to Afghanistan about the country’s plans for a new presidential election. An Obama administration’s spokesman said officials from Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission also took part in the hour-long video conference. Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Mr. Obama examined the current political situation in Afghanistan. He also said the discussions aim to fix what went wrong in the country’s presidential election two months ago.

An earthquake has struck northeast Afghanistan shaking buildings in the capital, Kabul. The magnitude of the earthquake measures 6.2. The United States Geographic Survey said the quake struck the Hindu Kush area near the border with Pakistan and Tajikistan. People in Islamabad, Pakistan also felt the quake. There are no reports of injuries or damage.
