You have found us once again here at VOA special English now at 00:30 universal time in the news of the day

Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s main opponent in the vote for President is expected to announce soon if he will boycott the election next week. Campaign officials say that Dr. Abdullah Abdullah will announce his decision at a news conference on Sunday morning. Talks between the two sides were set to continue late on Saturday. Dr. Abdullah has suggested several conditions to avoid the repeat of dishonesty in the August vote. The former Foreign Minister demanded the removal of the top election officials it accused that has been involved in the cheating. But Mr. Karzai rejected the idea.

Pakistani soldiers closed in at least 2 militant bases in South Waziristan on Saturday. The action is a part of the army’s offensive against Taliban militants. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said that political and military leaders are united in the fight against terrorists and “that defeat is not a choice”. Mr. Gilani spoke to reporters in the northern city of Peshawar. The Pakistani government began the offensive in South Waziristan two weeks ago. The military said that its troops killed 33 militants in the latest operation in tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says Israeli is offering what she called “unprecedented limits on Jewish settlement expansion.” Ms. Clinton commented after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday in Jerusalem. She gave no details on what compromises the Israeli leader offered about settlements. Early in the day the Secretary of State held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Abu Dhabi. The Palestinian leader called for a complete stop to Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank. He said that will have to happen before peace negotiations with Israel could restart.

Leading Iranian lawmakers have rejected the United Nations led plan to show much of Iran’s uranium to Russia for more enrichment. The head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission said that the proposal gave Iran no guarantee that will get the uranium back. The plan was meant to prevent Iran from enriching uranium that can be used for nuclear weapons.

Officials in Iraq say that a man being questioned about deadly bombings in Bagdad last week has killed a policeman. Iraq’s Interior Ministry says the man grabbed the gun from a guard during the questioning. The suspect wounded the guard then shot and killed the policeman. A statement said that the suspect later died in a hospital. It is no clear he was shot by police or if he took his own life.

Gunmen in northern Mexico killed 15 people in the state of Sonora. Among the death was Margarito Montes, a well-known leader of farm workers. Police said that the victim’s bodies were found on Friday on the farm road near the border between the states of Sonora and Sinaloa. So far the reason for the killing is not known. But they were similar to other killings ordered by illegal drug groups acted in the area.

The powerful storms struck the Philippines early on Saturday killing at least 11 people. Another 115,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Officials say Typhoon Mirinae known locally as “Santi” has weakened and is moving to west. The storm hit land in the eastern province of Quezon early Friday and brought over Manila and the southern provinces on the main island of Luzon. Whole villages were flooded.

The grandson of former Soviet dictator Josef Stalin has taken legal action against the Russian newspaper.  Yevgeny Dzhugashvilli says that the newspaper Novaya Gazeta hurt what he called “his grandfather’s good name”. In the recent story the newspaper accused Josef Stalin of personally signing death orders for leaders of Communist Party. The grandson is asking $300,000 from the newspaper. His lawyer claims that the story damaged Stalin’s images as a great leader but its stories say millions were in prison and executed while he was in power.

The November issue of the National Geography magazine has published a photograph of chimpanzees set up Rescue Center in Cameroon. The Chimpanzees are standing in line with their hands of each other of backs as they watched the burial of another chimpanzee named Dorothy. Dorothy was in her late forties during her life at the center she acted as a mother and friends to many of chimpanzees. Her kindness to other animals came after her on rescue from a climate park. She has spent 25 years at the park tied to the ground by a chain around her neck.

And in Washington President and Ms. Obama have welcomed about 2,000 children at the front door of White House. The children were wearing costumes to observe the Halloween Holiday. They cerebrated by saying “trick or treat ”and by receiving sweat candies and other foods.
