President Obama says America will use every part of its national power to defeat terrorists anywhere in the world who might want to attack the United States. Mr. Obama spoke from Hawaii. He said that the United States is doing everything it can to protect its citizens and he said the government is studying its security measures in an effort to prevent future attacks. Earlier an Al-Qaeda group in Yemen said it was responsible for the attempted bombing Friday of a Northwestern Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. The internet statement claimed to be from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. It said the attack was in answer to American efforts against militant group in Yemen.

Opposition groups in Iran say officials have arrested at least 8 reformer leaders as part of campaign against anti-government demonstrations. At least 8 activists were killed during such protests Sunday in Tehran. One was a family member of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. Iranians in several cities have sent videos of the protests to Voice of America. They appeared to support the witness stories of violence clashes between protesters and government security forces. Opposition websites say three advisors to Mr. Mousavi have been detained. They also say officials arrested human rights activist Emad Baghi, former Foreign Minister Ebrahim Yazdi and others.

President Obama says the United States joints the international community in condemning what he called “the violence and unjust suppression of Iran’s citizens”. Mr. Obama called on Iran to honor the rights of its own people and release those who have been “unjustly detained”. Many western nations have also taken positions against Iran’s treatment of political activists. The European Union condemns Iran’s use of violence against those tried to gather peacefully. A statement from the EU President said Iran must respect the rights of its people.

Pakistani officials say a suicide bomber has attacked a Shiite Muslim religious gathering in the southern city of Karachi. 30 people were killed and many more were injured. Officials say the attacker was walking with the other people when he exploded his bomb. They were observing the Shiite Muslim’s Holy Day of Ashura. The attack started a riot in parts of Karachi. Angrily people began throwing stones and firing guns into the air.

Israel has announced plans to build almost 700 homes in disputed East Jerusalem. Palestinian officials condemned the plan. They say such building projects robbed Palestinians of lands they wanted for an independent Palestinian state. Israel claims all the Jerusalem and does not consider these new homes to be illegal settlements. The spokesman for President Obama says the United States opposes all new Israeli building projects in East Jerusalem. Spokesman Robert Gibbs said the issue will be settled through negotiations.

Officials say the attack took place Monday near the western town of Djamballa. It is northwest of the capital Niamey and near Niger border with Mali. Thai soldiers on Monday began to send about 4,000 ethnic Hmong back to Laos. The United States State Department and the organization Human Rights Watch say this action violated international humanitarian ethics. Human Rights leaders say the Hmong asylum seekers could be abused when they are returned to Laos. The Hmong help American forces during the Vietnam War. They left Laos in large numbers in 1975. Tens of thousands of Hmong immigrated to the United States.

A Chinese ship carrying 25 crew members is sailing to a safe port after it was released by hijackers on Sunday. A ship from Singapore has also been released. This ship has 21 crew members. The Chinese ship was held for 70 days. Forces with the European Union say the crew members are in good condition. The hijackers say they received the payment of $ 4 million to release the ship. China’s Foreign Minister and the EU did not confirm the payment.

In Croatia the Social Democratic Party Presidential candidate Ivo Josipovic won the presidential election held Sunday. However he did not receive enough votes to take office. He will face second-place candidate Milan Bandic in the final election next month. Mr. Bandic is the mayor of the capital city of Zagreb. Mr. Josipovic is a legal expert and writer of music. Official results showed he won 32.4% of the vote. Mr. Bandic received 14.8% of the vote. 12 candidates entered the contest to replace of President Stipe Mesic, he has served two 5-year terms.
