A suicide bomber has killed 8 American civilians at a United States military base in eastern Afghanistan. Another bomb killed 4 Canadian soldiers and a reporter in the south. United States officials say a bomber exploded a bomb at Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost Province. No NATO or United States troops were killed. In a separated attack the Canadian Defense Ministry says 5 Canadians were killed when their vehicles hit a bomb in the southern city of Kandahar. The Canadian reporter was identified as 34-year old Michelle Lang of the Calgary Herald. In other news the spokesman for International troops in Afghanistan says NATO has no direct events to support claims by the Afghan government. Afghan officials claimed that foreign troops killed 10 civilians on Sunday.

Dutch and Nigerian officials say the two countries will begin using security devices to closely examine airplane passengers travelling to the United States. The announcement came on the reaction to the failed bombing of an airplane last week. The plane was travelling from Amsterdam to the United States. The Interior Minister of the Netherland said the devices will be in use within three weeks. Later Wednesday the director of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority said the devices will also be used in Nigerian airports.

Yemeni forces have clashed with Al-Qaeda militants in the western Al-Hudaydah area. Security officials say government forces were on the operation to capture Al-Qaeda militants Wednesday. They say at least one suspected militant was captured north of Bajil and several others were wounded. Earlier this week a group known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said that it planned the attempted bombing of an American passenger airplane. The group released a statement on the internet. It said the attack was an answer to United States support of operations against Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen.

Tens of thousands of Iranians have gathered in Tehran and other cities to show support for the government. The crowds waved signs and held pictures of its conservative clerical rulers. They also blamed Iran’s political opposition for the recent unrest. The government organized the demonstrations to answer a recent series of opposition protests. On Sunday opposition supporters gathered during the Shiite Muslim Day of mourning Ashura. The government said 8 people were killed when security forces stopped those protests. Opposition activists believe the number killed is much higher.

An Argentine judge has sentenced a former Roman Catholic official to 8 years in prison for sexually attacking a student in a Catholic religious school. Judge Maria Mascheroni sentences former archbishop Edgardo Storni on Wednesday. He is expected to serve his term under house arrest because he is more than 70 years old. His lawyer says Storni will appeal. Storni resigned his position in 2002 when he faced many accusations of abuse.

Venezuela’s economy shrank 3% this year. Central Bank President Nelson Merentes said in the report that a 6% decrease in the oil industries hurt the economy. Venezuela was last in the recession in 2003. The economy decreased by 8% that year. A failed attempt to oust President Huge Chavez in 2002 led to an opposition led strike that stopped oil production the following year.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband says a British man held hostage in Iraq for more than 2 years has been freed. Mr. Miliband said Peter Moore was released Wednesday and “is in good health”. The technology advisor and his four British bodyguards were kidnapped in Bagdad in May of 2007. The group called the League of the Righteous claimed responsibility. The bodies of three of the bodyguards have been returned to Britain. Mr. Miliband says the fourth bodyguard is believed to be dead.

The Taliban’s main group in Pakistan is claiming responsibility for the suicide attack on a Shiite religious ceremony Monday that killed at least 43 people. A Pakistani Taliban commander told reporters that his group sent the bomber who carried out the attack in the southern city of Karachi. The commander warned a more attacks in the coming days. Fires and violent riots that followed the attack destroyed more than 500 stores on the roads where the ceremony took place. Thousands of people in Karachi attended funerals for the victims Tuesday. Some said they blamed the government for failing to provide enough security.

And finally this news on the night of December 31st a so-called blue moon will appear in the sky. A blue moon means that it is a second full moon to appear in one calendar month. The moon does not actually turn blue. The name is used by English speakers to describe something that seems impossible or that happens very rarely. A blue moon happens every 2.5 years but to appear on New Year’s Eve is much more rare. The last time a blue moon appeared on New Year’s Eve was in 1990. It was not happened again until 2028.
