Iran says the West has one month to accept Iranian terms for a nuclear fuel deal or Iran will begin making nuclear fuel on its own. Foreign Minister Manouchehr Motakki made the demand on an Iranian state TV Saturday. The new proposal comes after Iran rejected an agreement designed to reduce supply of being enriched uranium and limit its ability to make nuclear weapons. In Washington National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said the existing proposal answers Iran’s request for nuclear fuel. He also said the proposal has the support of other nations.

President Obama says it seems Al-Qaeda group in Yemen trained and equipped the man who tried to explode the United States airplane on Christmas Day. Mr. Obama commented during his weekly radio and internet broadcast saying the Al-Qaeda group in Yemen had attacked American targets before. He said the attacks included the killing of an American at the US embassy in Yemen in 2008. Mr. Obama said the US government is strengthening its partnership with Yemen to strike Al-Qaeda Terrorists.

Afghanistan's Parliament has rejected most of the nominees proposed by President Hamid Karzai for his new Cabinet. Of the 24 candidates only 7 were approved by members of Parliament during a secret ballot on Saturday. Among those rejected was the Energy Minister who was nominated for a second term. The former guerrilla commander is accused of human rights abuses. Parliament also rejected the only woman in the Cabinet, the current Minister of Women’s Affairs. Mr. Karzai can nominate any of the rejected nominees for a second time but not for a third, must offer another list of nominees to Parliament before the new government can officially begin.    

Officials in Yemen say United States General David Petraeus met with President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Saturday. General Petraeus directs the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The two men discussed the security situation in Yemen. The American General recently said America will increase by almost 100% the $ 70 million in security aid is sent to Yemen yearly. Yemeni officials said Saturday that extra security forces have been deployed to eastern provinces where Al-Qaeda militants operated. On Friday the Somali Islamic extreme rebel group called Al-Shabab said that it was sending fighters to Yemen to help Al-Qaeda there.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister has accused Israel of hurting Middle East peace efforts. Prince Saud al-Faisal told news reporters that Israel acts like “a child”. He said that the country gets special treatment from the international community and it is never punished or held responsible even when it breaks the law. Prince Faisal called on the other countries to pressure Israel to stop building settlements in areas that Palestinians want for a future state. Prince Faisal’s comments followed the meeting in Riyadh with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Mr. Davutoglu also condemned Israeli settlement activity. The government of Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas has refused to enter talks with Israel until the completely stop of all building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Rescue crews and Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state continued to search for survivors of destructed landslides in the southeastern coast area. At least 53 people have been killed. Small mountains of wet earth were over hotels and buried homes. Officials say hundreds of travelers were visiting vacation scenes in the area to welcome in the New Year. The rains have stopped now but officials feared heavy rains that are expected in the next few days could bring more earth slides.

A volcano that exploded in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is threatening chimpanzees at a National Park. But rangers say the volcano erupted early Saturday. The Congolese Wildlife Authority says melted rock from the volcano is likely to destroy the home of about 40 chimpanzees on the Mountain’s low levels. The agency also said mountain gorillas that lived that part are not in the lava’s pass. The park’s director said the explosion is a cause of great concern.

In Burma a lawyer for anti-government leader Aung San Sun Kyi says the nation’s Supreme Court will consider her appeal against her house arrest. Her lawyer told VOA Saturday that the Court will hear final arguments on January 18th. Aung San Sun Kyi is disputing a lower court decision rejecting her earlier appeal of the house arrest. Burma extended her 14-year long house arrest last year. Aung San Sun Kyi cannot take part in elections next year if she is under house arrest.

In Ireland a group that denies the existence of law powerful being has launched the campaign against the disputed new law. The law bans blasphemy, disrespect for God or disrespect for something held to be Holy. The law took effect January 1st. The group called Atheist Ireland has published a series of anti-religious sins on its website. Statements supposedly made by “Jesus cries” and “the Prophet Muhammad” are included among the sins. Financial punishment for blasphemy can be up to $36,000.00 and the group says that the religious laws have no place in the modern republic; says the laws could be a dangerous example for religious extremists surround the world.
