The United States and Britain have closed their embassies in Yemen because of security concerns. American anti-terrorism official John Brennan says there are signs that al-Qaida is planning an attack in Yemen. He said the diplomatic building is a possible target. The American embassy in Sana’a said the threats are from the group al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula. That group has been linked to the attempted bombing of an American passenger airplane on Dec. 25th. The embassy building was the target of a deadly al-Qaida attack in 2008.

The American government has ordered more security inspections for people flying into the United States from countries with ties to terrorism. The Transportation Security Administration made the announcement, it said increased security will apply to every individual flying into the United States “from or through nations that are state supporters of terrorism or other countries of interest”. The measures may include using special technologies to view pictures of a person’s body as it goes through security, also belongings may be tested for explosive materials. The new security measures follow the failed attack on an airplane travelling to the United States on Dec. 25th.

Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected American missile attack has killed at least five people in the North Waziristan area. The attack reportedly was carried out by an unpiloted American military airplane. Officials say the missiles hit a home near the main city of Miran Shah . The French News Agency reported a security official as saying two Pakistani militants and three foreign militants were killed. Hours earlier a bomb struck a vehicle in the Hangu area in North West Frontier Province, the explosion killed a former local official, his two guards and a driver.

A spokesperson for Afghan President Hamid Karzai says the leader is not happy with parliament’s action to reject 70% of his cabinet choices. However, the spokesman said Mr. Karzai respects the constitution and will present another list of nominees, he did not say when. The official spoke to reporters Sunday. On Saturday Afghan lawmakers rejected 17 of the 24 candidates President Karzai had proposed to head the ministries. Critics call some of the rejected unqualified, corrupt or linked to corrupt local leaders. Kai Eide , the head of the United Nations’ office in Afghanistan expressed surprise at parliament’s action, he said the action will cause more delay in establishing a working government.

Eritrea says its forces have killed ten Ethiopian soldiers during clashes in a border town. The Eritrean Information Ministry says soldiers from Ethiopia’s TPLF party launched a series of attacks on the town of Zalambesa Jan. 1st. It says the soldiers were forced back, with ten killed and two others captured. The report has not been independently confirmed. Reuter’s News Agency reports an Ethiopian official as saying Eritrea is trying to prevent reports about an Eritrean crisis. Two Eritrean rebel groups say they killed 25 Eritrean soldiers, Friday, in an attack on two military camps. Eritrea has not commented on that report.

About 700 workers in northern China are trying to stop an oil pipeline leak from reaching the Yellow River, a water source for millions of people. Local government officials say the spill was discovered Wednesday. It caused a major leak into the Wei River in Shaanxi province. The Xinhua News Agency says up to 150,000 liters spilled into the river. The China National Petroleum Corporation said much of the fuel has been removed and the leak has been brought under control. But earlier reports said the fuel had already been found about 33km from the spill area.

Heavy snow in Beijing has trapped thousands of people at the main airport in China’s capital. Weather experts in the city said snowstorms will continue through Monday with temperatures as low as minus 16 degrees Celsius. The heavy snow has interfered with traffic at Beijing’s Capital Airport. More than 90% of the flights were cancelled or delayed. Snow and falling temperatures are also expected to continue this week in large areas of northern China, including Tianjin, Inner Mongolia and Hebei.

Officials in Tajikistan say about 20,000 people are homeless following an earthquake Saturday. No deaths have been reported. Officials say the earthquake measured five in strength and destroyed more than 1,000 homes in the Vanch area, that is about 400km southeast of the capital Dushanbe. Local officials estimate the cost of the damage at $1,500,000. The quake also cut electric power and communications in the area.

Rescue crews in Brazil are searching for survivors of mudslides that have killed at least 76 people in the southeastern coastal area. Emergency workers have searched in Rio de Janeiro state and nearby Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo states following days of heavy rains. A hillside collapsed Friday in the coastal town of Angra dos Reis , destroying a hotel and covering homes. A similar mudslide was reported on the island of Ilha Grande . Rains eased Sunday. But officials fear heavy rains expected in the next few days could cause more mudslides.
