And so we meet once again you and I are in the name of VOA special English at 00:30 universal time in the news of the day.

Thousands of the American, British and Afghan troops have secured parts of Taliban Headquarters town in Southern of Afghanistan. The United States helicopters and vehicles enter the farming community in Helmand Province early on Saturday. It was the first day of the large military offensive. As many as 1,000 militants are thought to be in the area. But United States troops say they have met with a little resistance. A British military spokesman said that the part of the town has been secured. An Afghan army commander said that at least 20 Taliban militants were killed. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization says that one American and one British soldier were killed.

An explosion in Indian in the western city of Pune has killed at least 9 people including a foreigner. More than 40 others were wounded. Police investigators expected that the Saturday explosion at the popular German bakery was an act of terrorism. The police say that an explosive device was probably hidden in a paper container and it is exploded this one of the restaurant workers opened it. Official say the bakery is near the Osho Ashram, a meditation center popular with travelers. The bakery is not far from a Jewish culture center operated by the Hambar movement. The movement was the target during the attacks on Mumbai in November of 2008.

Officials in Iraq say that the series of bomb attacks have struck the officers of at least 5 political groups in Bagdad. At least 8 people were wounded in the Saturday attacks. The targets included the officers of Sunni lawmaker Sali Hamuclark. A court decision banned him from the March 7th elections for his suspected links to the Baath Party of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. He is a member of the non-religious Iraqiya Political Coalition that just announces it will temporarily suspend campaigning. The Iraqiya Coalition is protesting the court decision that bars several of its Sunni candidates from competing. Former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi leads the Coalition.

American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has left for Qatar and Saudi Arabia for talks with American allies. Secretary Clinton and officials there are expected to discuss Iran and efforts to restart the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Ms. Clinton is expected to arrived in Doha, the capital of Qatar on Sunday there she will meet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani. She will speak to the United States-Islamic World Forum in Doha. The meeting is part of the Obama administration’s efforts to improve the relation with Muslim’s countries.

Officials in Burma have freed the Deputy Chairman of the main opposition party after holding him for 7 years. Tin Oo was released on Saturday. He is in his early 80s. Tin Oo told VOA that he will start to work again for democracy in Burma. He said that the National League for Democracy will not take part in elections unless the government released Aung San Suu Kyi, the Party’s top leader from house arrest.

A coalition of opposition parties in Ivory Coast says that it no longer recognizes President Laurent Gbagbo as Head of state. The group accused Mr. Gbagbo of carrying out of rebellion on Friday after he closed down the government and an electoral commission. The Coalition called the action “unconstitutional”. It accused the President of creating a dictatorship and urged Ivorians to oppose the action by all means of possible. A leader for one of the opposition parties says fighting should be expected. 

Presidential candidates in Sudan have begun campaigning in the country’s first multi-party election in 24 years. There are 12 candidates running for President including Sudan’s long time leader Omar al-Bashir. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur. Other candidates included Yasir Arman, a high level party official with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement in Southern Sudan. The list also includes Sudan’s last elected Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi. Mr. Bashir ousted him in 1989. Fatima Abdel Mahmoud is country’s first woman campaign for the President. She represents the Sudanese Democratic Socialist Union Party. The elections set for April 11th.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko says she has proof that the nation’s presidential elections last week were dishonest. Ms. Tymoshenko said that she will use the legal system to try to change the results. Official results gave for main opponent Viktor Yanukovich a lead of 3.5 percentages points. She said she wants to clearly state that Mr. Yanukovich is not Ukraine’s legal President. She asked Ukrainians to support her legal battle but she said she will not organize protest as in 2004. At that time she successfully fought Mr. Yanukovich’s election. World leaders already have congratulated Mr. Yanukovich that leaders praised the election as “free and fair”.
