WORLD NEWS --- May 13th, 2010

It is 1:30 universal time, and here is the news in Special English.

President Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai met Wednesday in Washington. The two leaders say they fully support a long time partnership between the two countries.  After talks, Mr. Obama discussed what he called perceived tensions between Afghanistan and United States.  He said both sides support the goal of secure and peaceful of Afghanistan.  Mr. Karzai did not directly discuss reports of corruption in his administration.  But he recognized what he called issues of concerned in his country.  He said talks with President Obama without it in stronger ties.  The leaders discussed fighting Al-Queda, building up Afghan forces, and strengthening the Afghan governments.

A Libyan passenger plane has crashed in the capital city of Tripoli.  The crash killed everyone on board except one Dutch child.  The plane was flying from Johannesburg South Africa.  It crashed Wednesday morning just short off the runway at the Tripoli airport.  Dutch official say sixty one of one hundred and three people killed were found Netherlands.  Travelers from nearly ten other countries were on the flight.  All of eleven crew members were Libyan along with at least thirteen of the passengers.  Libyan officials are investigating the cause of the accident, but have rejected the possibility of terrorism.  The weather in Tripoli at the time of the crash was described as good.

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says United Nations Security Council resolutions are worthless.  He said Iran will not stop from carrying out its nuclear program.  President Ahmadinejad spoke Wednesday to a crowd in the Iranian city of Yasuj.  He rejected American efforts to place new restrictions against Iran.  He said UN resolutions are not worth a penny.  The Iranian president described his recent visit to New York for a UN conference on nuclear disarmament as a success.  He said he was able to prove to some western leaders that their positions are wrong.

The United Nation says Mongolia has suffered one of its worst winters in fifty years.  Severe weather killed huge farm animal populations, and has left nearly eight hundred thousand people in need of humanitarian aid.  The UN appealed Wednesday for more than eighteen million dollars in aid for the country.  Mongolia's Top UN representative says at least seven and half million animals have died so far this winter.  That number represents over seventeen percent of the country's animals.  Rana Flowers says animals are still dying because of continued heavy snowfall and cold temperatures.

State Media in Venezuela say officials have arrested nineteen Colombians.  The Colombians are accused of carrying illegal weapons and cutting down trees in the Venezuelan State of Miranda.  (Radio Nacional) 国家广播电台 reported that local mayor Juan Aponte has saying Colombians maybe part of a military units.  Last month Colombia warned its citizens not to visit Venezuela.  The move came after officials in Venezuela said about twenty Colombians have been arrested and accused of spying on the government of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.

The energy company BP says it will decide Thursday on what method to use to try to stop a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. One method involves placing a tube into the pipe that is leaking hundreds of thousands of liters of oil everyday.  The company is also considering using a new containment dome to trap the leaking oil.  Both methods would send the oil to a ship on the water surface.  BP says the dome has been lowered into the water but will not be placed over the leak until at least Thursday.  The spill has so far cost the company about three hundred fifty million dollars.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has praised country's new coalition government.  He said the coalition between his Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats represents a huge change in Britain's political system.  Mr. Cameron said important conditions of the new government will include in his words: freedom, fairness, and responsibility.  He described the coalition as a government double last.  And he said the United Britain could look forward to better times.  Mr. Cameron also said the Liberal Democrats will be represented at all levels of government.  He spoke next to his coalition partner a Britain's new deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Russia says it may for the first time announced the sizes of its nuclear weapons supply.  The move comes a week after the United States announced it had over five thousand nuclear warheads in its supply.  A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman says Russia may release information when a nuclear arms reduction treaty between the United States and Russia goes into effect.  He told reporters Wednesday that Russia believes the announcement by the United States will increase trust between nuclear and non-nuclear countries.

The sixty third Cannes Film Festival has begun in France. The event opened Wednesday was showing of director Ridley Scott's movie Robin Hood.  Over the next two weeks, directors from countries including South Korea, China, Iran, Russia, and Thailand will compete for the best picture a world.   A group of judges will choose the best films.  Cannes organizers left one of the jury chairs empty to protest the (jelling) a one of the judges Iranian director Jahar Panahi.  Iranian police arrested him in March on charges planning an anti-government film.
