The widows of two workers who died in the April 20th oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico have asked congress to hold BP responsible. They are also urging lawmakers to lift President Obama's ban on offshore drilling. The women spoke to lawmakers in Washington Monday. They said the oil companies that ignore safety guidelines should be punished. Both said their husbands discussed safety fears with them before the oil rig exploded. Earlier Monday, President Obama said the economic effect of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will be major. The president says he wants to make sure the BP oil company is quick to pay people who are suffering economically because of the spill.

Israel says it will carry out its own investigation into the deadly raid last week on an aid ship headed for the Gaza Strip. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told parliament the investigation will decide if Israel's raid on the Mavi Marmara and its Gaza blockade obey international laws. Mr. Barak commented an answer to no confidence measures presented by Israeli opposition parties since the raid. The Israeli government defeated the motions on Monday. On Sunday, Israel rejected a plan from United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-moon to create an international committee to investigate the raid.

The Prime Minister of Turkey says Israel must be punished for its raid on the humanitarian aid ship sailing to Gaza last week. Eight Turkish nationals and an American were killed in the raid. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to reporters during a meeting on security in Asia. The meeting is expected to pressure Israel to allow an international investigation of the raid.

Ten NATO soldiers were killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan Monday. NATO said that in the east five service members all Americans died when the roadside bomb exploded. Another soldier was killed by small arms fire. In Southern of Afghanistan three NATO troops died in two separate bomb attacks while another was killed in a gun battle. Also Monday an American police trainer and a Napoli's security guard were killed in a Taliban suicide attack in Kandahar.

A court in India has found eight men guilty of involvement in the 1984 gas leak in the central city of Bhopal. Three thousand five hundred people were killed in the accident resulting from the operations of the Union Carbide Company. That company no longer exists. Seven of the former Union Carbide employees were sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay about two thousand dollars each and eighth person was also found guilty but is no longer living.

American vice president Joe Biden has arrived in Kenya for a three-day visit. He is to meet with Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Mr. Biden says he will talk about constitutional reform in Kenya and also the conflicts in Sudan and Somalia.

An American official says twelve Americans have been detained in Yemen following reports of the arrests of several foreigners with suspected ties to Al-Qaeda. An American State Department spokesman gave no details on why the twelve Americans were detained. But he said the American government is doing its best to help Yemen's government reduce the threat from Al-Qaeda in Yemen known as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Media reports say Yemeni security forces in recent months have arrested more than thirty foreigners suspected to have links to Al-Qaeda. The reports say those arrested include American, British and French citizens.

A large Taiwanese electronics company says it will increase pay for some workers at its Southern Chinese factories. The move is part of an effort by the Foxconn technology group to deal with a series of employee suicides in Shenzhen. Foxconn says it will raise pay by up to 66% beginning October first for all assembly line workers in Shenzhen. The company said the pay increases will be based on performance. Ten Foxconn workers in Shenzhen have killed themselves this year by jumping out windows and eleventh employee of the company killed himself in Northern China. Labor activists say Foxconn workers face long hours, low pay and poor treatment by supervisors.

In Croatia, President Ivo Josipovic says the broken countries are turning their backs on the ethnic wars of the 1990's and rebuilding ties. Mr. Josipovic told Reuter's news agency that reconciliation among the former Yugoslav Republics is important for joining the European Union. He said he knows many problems still exist including the returned of refugees, protecting minorities and settling border disputes. These problems can not be fixed immediately he said, but starting the process toward fixing them is what matters. Croatia and Serbia plan to sign a new defense cooperation agreement on Tuesday. The agreement includes possible military exercises and information exchanges.

European Union President Herman van Rompuy says the group's members support the idea of restrictions on EU countries with huge debts. The measures would include permitting EU Finance Ministers to discuss their individual budgets while they are being developed so that fiscal problems can be identified. Also Monday Finance Ministers from countries that use the Euro began finalizing plans for a one-trillion dollar account so that troubled economies can take out emergency loans. The plan is mended to prevent the kind of financial crisis that has troubled Greece and caused the value of Euro to drop.
