It is 00:30 universal time. I'm Bob Calkan reporting the news in Washington.

An Iranian news agency says plans for the release Saturday of an American held in Iran have been canceled. The ILNA news agency says Sarah Shourd's legal process has not been completed. Ms. Shourd and Americans Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were arrested the end of July of last year. The 3 say they were hiking and walked into Iranian territory by accident. Iran accused them of spying.

President Obama has appealed for a religious understanding and acceptance. On Friday, he said the United States is not at war with Islam but with a minority if people carrying out acts of terror. The president spoke in a news conference one day before the 9th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States. The president also spoke and answered to the plans of a religious leader to burn copies of the Islam's Holy Book, the Quran. Reverend Terry Jones separately is going to suspend his plan. President Obama said Mr. Jones proposed act threatens American troops. Mr. Jones said he will not burn the Quran as long as he is able to meet Saturday with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf. Imam Rauf has proposed building an Islamic center close to where New York City's World Trade Center once stood. Imam Rauf says there are no plans for a meeting or moving the planned center.

President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates will attend ceremony at the Pentagon Saturday. It will be in remembrance of the 9th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks. In New York, the names of the victims would be read out by family members. People will also spend a moment in silence at the time when the first hijacked plane and also when the second plane hit the World Trade Center towers. Events to honor the victims will take place across the United States. The official event in New York will be attended by Vice President Joe Biden.

President Obama has said he will keep pressuring Afghan President Hamid Karzai to fight corruption in his government. He spoke at the White House Friday. The president said Afghanistan has made progress in fighting corruption, but still has a long way to go. President Obama said his administration will continue to work with President Karzai. He added a successful Afghan government has to be seen as clean and fair.

Jordan has signed a nuclear cooperation agreement with Japan. Japan is the 9th country to sign a nuclear deal with Jordan. Jordan is planning to build its first nuclear power station. It hopes to have the station operating by 2019. Jordan says it needs a nuclear station to help meet its growing energy needs and decrease its energy costs. About 20% of Jordan's yearly budget is spent on energy.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has defended his leadership against criticism that his government is failing to support democracy. He said the current democratic Russian state is young and not perfect. But he said creating a system of parliamentary democracy would cause problems. Mr. Medvedev spoke at a meeting of political experts in the city of Yaroslavl. He said political reform has to come slowly without big changes. Mr. Medvedev denied that Russia has moved away from democratic leadership during his time in office. Critics of Mr. Medvedev say he has failed to fight corruption and has repeatedly crushed political operation. Supporters say he is the leader who can modernize Russia.

Former Cuban President Fidel Castro says he was misunderstood by a visiting United States reporter. He said the reporter Jeffrey Goldberg reported exactly the opposite of what Mr. Castro meant. Mr. Goldberg reported Wednesday "Mr. Castro is saying the Cuban economic system no long works for Cuba". Mr. Goldberg asked the former leader if he still believed Cuba should export its economic model to other countries. Mr. Goldberg's report was published in the Atlantic magazine. He recently traveled to Cuba to meet with Fidel Castro. They discussed the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, as well as the subjects of Iran and Israel.

In the state of California, investigators are trying to find out what caused a gas pipeline explosion and major fire. The explosion killed at least 4 people and injured more than 50 others. The explosion and fire started Thursday evening near San Francisco. More than 36 homes were destroyed. By Friday evening, 3/4 of the homes have been searched. The others were still too hot to enter.

Britain has temporarily returned to Iran the ancient Cyrus Cylinder. The Cyrus Cylinder is an ancient Babylonian object with cuneiform writing for the beginning of the Persian Empire. It was made in Babylon about 2,700 years ago. The cylinder records laws of the Persian ruler, Cyrus the Great. Iran says the Cyrus Cylinder is the first human rights declaration. The cylinder extra remained in Iran for 4 months as a loan.
