It is 00:30 universal time. I'm Bob Calkan reporting the news in Washington.

Afghans voted in parliamentary elections Saturday even as violent attack by Taliban militants increased. The Interior Minister says at least 11 civilians and 3 police officers were killed in election violence across the country. Afghan officials said the number of voters seemed low but General David Petraeus praised Afghans who voted although threatened with violence. General Petraeus commands troops of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Afghanistan. The violence included rocket strikes in northern Baghlan province, eastern Kunar and northern Takhar provinces.  A rocket also struck the capital before voting center's open.

Indian police say government forces in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed 3 people in 2 separate incidents Saturday. At least 100 people have died since anti-government protests began in June. Police killed one person taking part in a funeral march south of Srinagar. Officials say police fired on the mourners after they tried to set fire to the house of a pro-India politician. The funeral was for a man who was said to have drowned after being chased by police. Troops also fired on hundreds of stone-throwing protesters in Palhalan, northwest of Srinaga. 2 people were killed in an incident. Officials eased curfew in parts of Srinagar Saturday. This permitted the citizens to leave their homes to buy needed supplies.

Pope Benedict has met with victims of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests. The meeting came after the leader of the world's Catholics expressed deep sorrow for what he called unspeakable abuse of children. The Vatican said the Pope was moved by his meeting with 5 abuse survivors Saturday. It was the 3rd day of the first state visit to Britain by the Pope. Pope Benedict prayed with the abuse survivors and told them that the church is acting measures to keep young people safe. Earlier Saturday, the Pope spoke about the abuse while celebrating the Roman Catholic religious ceremony, the mass at Westminster Cathedral. Before the ceremony, the Pope met with British Prime Minister David Cameron. Thousands of people march through central London Saturday to protest the Pope's visit.

An American woman who was jailed in Iran for more than a year has begun her return to the United States. Sarah Shourd left Oman Saturday. She will arrive in New York on Sunday after a stop in the United Arab Emirates. At the airport in Oman, Ms. Shourd thanked Omani officials for helping to secure her release. She also extended prayers for her 2 friends who remained in prison in Iran. She did not talk about her captivity. Iranian officials seized the 3 last year after they crossed the country's border with Iraq. Family members say it was an accident. Iran freed Ms. Shourd last Tuesday after Omani officials helped negotiate payment for her temporary release until trial.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has officially begun his campaign to compete in the election for president in January. Mr. Jonathan made the announcement Saturday to supporters in Nigeria's main city, Abuja. On Wednesday, the President used the internet social network site Facebook to first announce that he would be a candidate. Mr. Jonathan became President 4 months ago after Nigeria's elected President died. He said he is running because he believes he can lead the country through that change. An unofficial power sharing agreement within the ruling party has caused some dispute about his candidate seat. The unofficial agreement says that the next president should be from the north of Nigeria.

Chile marked the 200th anniversary of its independence from Spain on Saturday. President Sebastian Pinera led the event in the capital, Santiago. Families of 33 trapped Chilean miners held their own ceremony at the entrance to the San Jose mine. The men sing the national song. The men have been trapped about 623 meters underground since part of the gold and copper mine collapsed in August. Rescue teams say the men could be free by this November.

The oil company BP says it is preparing a final process to test its damaged Gulf of Mexico oil well. The process will show if cement material has permanently closed the well. The oil company said Saturday that its engineers finished pouring the cement into the well bottom late Friday. Company officials said there now letting its set. A pressure test late Saturday could let engineers to declare the well dead.

And a Frenchman without arms and legs has succeeded in swimming across the English Channel. Philippe Croizon began the 35-kilometers swim from England to France earlier Sunday. He completed the effort in about 14 hours early 10 hours sooner than expected. Mr. Croizon used the breathing device called "snorkel" during the attempt. He spent 2 years preparing for the event.

Weather experts on the Atlantic Ocean island, Bermuda have warned people to prepare for severe ocean storm. The experts say the strong winds of Hurricane Igor will begin striking the island late Saturday. They also said the storm stronger. Hurricane force winds would follow on Sunday.
