It is zero hour thirty Universal Time, now, the news in VOA Special English.

United States congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head Saturday. She was holding a public event in the southwestern state of Arizona at the time. The 40-year-old legislator is being treated in a hospital after an operation. Doctors say they are hopeful that she will live. But a federal judge and a 9-year-old child won't, were killed. News reports said the 3 term democratic congresswoman was one of about 18 people shot outside the food store in the city of Tucson. A doctor at the hospital where Ms. Giffords was cared for says 10 gunshot victims had been brought the hospital. President Obama spoke from the White House about the shooting. He called it an unspeakable tragedy. He said the head of the FBI is going to Arizona to direct the investigation. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner condemned the attack, he called it senseless. The suspect in the shooting has been detained. Officials familiar with investigation are identified the shooter is Jared Loughner, a 22-yeaar-old man.

French Defense Minister Alain Juppe says 2 French citizens who were kidnapped late Friday in Niger were killed during a rescue attempt. In the statement Saturday Mr. Juppe said the Niger military chased kidnappers to the border with Mali killing several of them. The statement said the bodies of the hostages were discovered at the end of the operation. French troops in the area aided in the rescue attempt. The writer’s news agency reports that a French armed forces spokesman said the government believed the kidnappers killed the hostages. The men were taken Friday from a restaurant to the capital Niamey. Witnesses say the gunmen forced the 2 men to follow them out of the restaurant to a vehicle. No one has claimed responsibility for the kidnap.

Nigerian officials say at least 8 people have been killed in an attack on a bus carrying Muslims in the central part of the country. Police say the attack took place late Friday in an area where many Christians live. Gunfire could be heard in the city of Jos on Saturday as Muslims protested the attack. Also in Nigeria, officials say at least 2 people were killed in an attack on supporters of politician Timi Alaibe in the Niger Delta area. Police say Mr. Alaibe was not hurt when gunmen fired on his home late Friday in Opokuma in Bayelsa state. His supporters were at his home to welcome him back from Nigeria’s capital Abuja. Mr. Alaibe is competing for governor of Bayelsa state. He recently left his position as an advisor on the Niger Delta to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.

Southern Sudan military officials say at least 6 rebels have been killed in fighting between rebels and the South Sudan People’s Liberation Army. Colonel Phillip Aguer says soldiers clashed with fighters loyal to rebel leader Gatluak Gai in the south unity state on Friday and Saturday. He says the rebels have refused to sign an official pardon from the government in South Sudan. The colonel believes they are trying to bring disorder to the area before the South’s planned vote on independence. Starting Sunday Southern Sudanese will decide if the South becomes an independent country or remains united with the rest of Sudan.

NATO says a coalition soldier was killed Saturday by a roadside bomb explosion in eastern Afghanistan. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization did not provide the nationality of the soldier or the place where the bomb exploded. Also Saturday, NATO said 3 Afghan children playing in the Bagram area were injured by a bomb placed in the ground by militants. The children were taken to a local hospital.

Mexican police say they have found the bodies of 15 men in the city of Acapulco. The police say all the victims were in their twenties. Notes found near the bodies said El Chapo’s people. The note refers to the Sinaloa drug group led by Joaquin Guzman. He is one of the most wanted men in Mexico. The messages are barely meant that the men were killed for trying to operate in the gang’s territory. The Sinaloa group has been fighting other drug groups for control of the area around the Acapulco, one of the best known vacation places in Mexico. Many people visit the holiday city from around the world.

Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Bilbao in Span’s northern Basque area Saturday. They were supporting jailed separatists from the ETA movement. The demonstrators want the prisoner’s captain jails closer to their homes. They say the Spanish government has sent prisoners to jails throughout the country making it harder for their family member to visit them.

And finally, a representative of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to the United States this week. On Saturday, Israeli officials said Yitzhak Molcho will meet with Palestinian representative in Washington. The meeting is an attempt to restart peace talks with the Palestinians. They have been no talks since September when Israel refused to continue a partial suspension of the building of Jewish settlement in the West Bank. The Palestinians say they will not negotiate while Israel builds on lands the Palestinians want for a future state.
