It is zero hour thirty Universal Time. It’s Saturday in America, now the news in VOA Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise reporting live from Washington.

Police and army tanks are guarding the streets of the Tunisian capital as a temporary president takes over. There were reports of gunfire in Tunis Saturday, one day after demonstrations forced Tunisia’s president from power. There were also reports of more rioting over night. The Associated Press reports security forces exchanged gunfire with gunmen in front of the Interior Ministry. AP reporters say 2 people were seen on the ground. It was not clear if they were dead. Parliamentary speaker Fouad Mebazza was sworn in as a temporary president Saturday. He said he had asked the prime minister to form a unity government. On Friday, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia. He fled Tunisia after weeks of angry protests over corruption and a lack of jobs.

Voting in Southern Sudan has ended after a mostly peaceful week-long vote on independence. People in Southern Sudan are expected to have approved separation from North Sudan. That would create the world’s newest country. The United Nations says the early results will be announced on January 31st. Late Saturday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon praised the Southern Sudan referendum commission. Mr. Ban also praised the signers of the peace deal in 2005. That deal ended 21 years of war between the North and South and permitted the independence vote. Election officials have now confirmed that the number of voters was much higher than the 60% needed to make the election legal. An official from North Sudan’s ruling national congress party said Friday his party will accept the results. Former United States President Jimmy Carter says the vote is expected to be confirmed as free and fair.

About 70 million Nigerians are registering to vote in the presidential elections in April. Voters began signing up Saturday in 120 thousand elections station across African most heavily populated country. Election officials are hoping the registration process goes well. The country has a history of dishonest elections. Some problems were reported Saturday with electronic equipment. On Thursday, Nigeria’s ruling party said it would support President Goodluck Johnathan as its candidate for president. Mr. Johnathan is expected to win the April 9th election. The ruling party has won every presidential election since Nigeria return to civilian rule in 1999.

You are listening to the news in VOA Special English live from Washington.

NATO says a United States marine shot and killed an Afghan policeman after a dispute on Saturday. The shooting took place at a base in Helmand province. The marine claims the police officer threatened him and was handing his gun in a dangerous way. The marine says he shot the Afghan officer only after the man pointed the gun at him. NATO is investigating the shooting. Also Saturday, a bomb hidden on a bicycle wounded 4 Afghan police officers and 6 civilians in the Southern city of Kandahar. Police say the bomb exploded near the center of the city. A separate bomb attack in Daykundi province killed 3 Afghan civilians and seriously wounded a fouth. NATO says the civilians were in a vehicle that hit a bomb by the road. The alliance also says its forces helped kill several militants Saturday in operations across the Southern part of the country.

Major flooding and mud slides in Brazil have killed at least 605 people. Many of the dead are children. About 14 thousand people are homeless. There are fears that more rain could cause more flooding and deadly landslides. The continued bad weather has slowed rescue efforts for people trapped by high waters. Many bodies remain buried under mud and wreckage. Survivors are criticizing the government for not providing enough help. The flooding and landslides have been called one of the country’s worst national disasters. Earlier this week as much rain fell in a few days as normally falls in one month. Landslides and floods happed often in Brazil. They often affect areas where poor people live, because the poor build unsafe houses on insecure hillsides.

Police in the Greek capital Athens fought with protesters Saturday who attacked about 1,000 immigrants, trade unionists and human rights activists. The immigrants and their supporters were protesting a plan to build a fence barrier on the border with Turkey. Police say a large group of local people was throwing stones at police and the immigrants. Police used tear gas against the local people. No injuries were reported. There was one arrest. The immigrants and anti-racism groups have gathered in central Athens. They opposed a planned 12.5 km long border fence that the government hopes will reduce the number of illegal immigrants.

And finally, Cuba is praising President Obama’s decision to make it easier to travel from the United States to the island nation. The communist government says the decision is a defeat for those supported strong measures against the country. President Obama said Friday the measures will help support the independence of the Cuban people from their government.

Now, briefly, here again is the major news of the hour in VOA Special English.

Police and army tanks are guarding the streets of the Tunisian capital as a temporary president takes over. Completing of ballots in Southern Sudan has ended after a mostly peaceful week-long vote on independence. And NATO says a United States marine shot and killed an Afghan policeman after a dispute on Saturday.

And that’s the news in VOA Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise in Washington.
