文章来源:WORLD NEWS - May 21st, 2011

It is 00:30 universal time. Now, here is the news in VOA Special English. I'm Christopher Cruise in Washington.

The former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been released from a jail in New York City. Mr. Strauss-Kahn had been jailed for a few days on charges of sexual assault. He agreed to a payment of $1 million and a $5 million bond as guarantees that he would not flee. The judge ordered Mr. Strauss-Kahn to live in temporary housing in New York. Armed guards will watch him and his movements will be observed electronically. Mr. Strauss-Kahn is accused of sexually abusing a hotel employee on Saturday. He has denied the charges. Earlier this week, he resigned as head of the IMF.

President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu say differences remain over the way to gain peace in the Middle East. The two leaders met Friday in Washington. The meeting came one day after President Obama commented on possible future Israeli borders. Thursday, Mr. Obama said Israel's borders should be based on lines that existed before the war in 1967, but with new conditions. Mr. Netanyahu said he supports President Obama's efforts for peace. The Israeli prime minister said, "Israel wants peace, I want peace". He also said Israel is willing to make changes, but he said his nation will not go back to the lines before the 1967 war. He called that idea indefensible.

At least 30 people are dead after Syrian security forces fired on demonstrators protesting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Protesters gathered in several cities Friday. News agencies report that witnesses and activists say security forces fired bullets at protesters in the central city of Homs. At least 11 people were killed, including a child. At least 12 people were said to have been killed in the northern town of Maaret al-Numan.

American government vehicles were attacked in northwestern Pakistan Friday. Militants exploded a vehicle as two American embassy cars passed by in the city of Peshawar. Officials say the explosion killed one Pakistani and wounded 11 other people. American Embassy spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said two government employees suffered minor injuries. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. A Taliban spokesman said the bombing answered the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. He promised more attacks. Friday, Pakistani officials said a strike by an unmanned American airplane killed at least four suspected militants. The officials said the suspects were traveling in a vehicle in the North Waziristan tribal area.

You are listening to the news in VOA Special English live from Washington.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the State Department will make it easier for Iranian students to stay longer in the United States. Secretary Clinton announced Friday that Iranian students and exchange visitors are now able to receive two-year multiple-entry visas. Person who possess those documents can enter the United States more than once. In the past, visas lasted three months and could be used to enter the country just once. The Secretary of State said she has heard from many Iranians and Iranian-Americans who wanted the changes made. She said the United States wants more discussions with those who are creating Iran's future. She said Americans want to share what they believe is great about the United States.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization says it hit eight warships used by Libyan forces in a series of airstrikes. A NATO statement says the ships were attacked in the ports of Sirte, Al Khums and Tripoli. A NATO official says the alliance had no choice but to take decisive action after Libyan forces carried out mining operations and increased the use of its navy forces. Separately, American military officials said they have sent the Libyan rebels more than 120,000 meals and will provide more in the next few days. The meals reportedly meet Muslim dietary restrictions. The United States Defense Department said it is also sending military clothing, tents and protective clothing to the rebels.

And finally at this hour. The International Criminal Court has ordered an investigation of possible crimes against humanity in Ivory Coast. The ICC named judges Friday to study reports of crimes during violence that followed presidential elections last November. The violence has been blamed for the deaths of an estimated 3,000 people. Human rights groups accuse supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo and current President Alassane Ouattara of killing and injuring civilians. Last week, President Ouattara promised justice for all victims of the violence. He said anyone found guilty of crimes would be punished without exception.

Now briefly, here again is the major news of the hour in VOA Special English.

Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been released from a jail in New York City. But he still faces charges from a reported sexual attack. He agreed to a payment of $1 million and a $5 million bond as guarantees that he would not flee. President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met at the White House on Friday. After the meeting the two men admitted differences about how to bring peace to the Middle East. The meeting came one day after President Obama commented on possible future Israeli borders. And Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the State Department will make it easier for Iranian students to stay longer in the United States.

And that's the news in VOA Special English. I'm Christopher Cruise reporting from Washington.
