And this is VOA Special English now at 1:30 universal time.

And the news this day, two people have been rescued in Haiti 10 days after they were buried in wreckage by the earthquake. An 84-year-old Haitian woman was found under the wreckage of her home, and was taken to a local hospital. It is not certain if Marie Carida Romain will survive. In another part of the capital Port-au-Prince a 22-year-old man was rescued by an Israeli team. They took him to an Israeli Field Hospital for treatment. Thousands of Haitians have left the capital Port-au-Prince to move into temporary camps nearby. Officials estimate that more than 200,000 people were killed in the earthquake last week. About 1,500,000 people are homeless.

The United Nations Children's Fund says that some Haitian children are missing from the country's hospitals. The UN agency says their disappearance have raised concerns of children being removed from Haiti illegally. UNICEF official Jean Claude Legrand says the agency has confirmed disappearances of about 15 children. He said there are signs of people entering the Dominican Republic with children and of airplanes loading children at the airport. He said UNICEF and its partners have set up a security system to register disappearances and to work to prevent them.

The British government has raised its terror warning level to "severe". That is the second highest warning in Britain's five level terror warning system. The British Home Office announced the warning on Friday. Home Secretary Alan Johnson said there was no intelligence suggesting that an attack was coming immediately, but intelligence officials have found information leading them to believe that terrorists may be planning something. The decision to raise the threat level came after a suggestion by Britain's Joint Terrorism Analysis Center.

News reports say a special committee has proposed that more than 30 prisoners at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba face trial all military courts. The committee called for the United States to continue holding about 50 other prisoners without charging them. The committee was created by President Obama to investigate future plans for the prisoners as part of his promise to close the prison at Guantanamo. Officials who did not want to be identified told American media about the committees suggestions.

Vice-President Joe Biden is in Iraq for talks with top Iraqi officials. They are expected to discuss the decision by an Iraqi government committee to ban candidates from the Parliamentary elections. Mr. Biden is expected to meet with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani on Saturday. More than 500 candidates have been barred from the March elections. They were banned for their reported links to the Baath Party of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The ban led to accusations that the Shiite majority is trying to limit the political power of the Sunni minority. The dispute could affect the planned withdraw of the United States military from Iraq.

This is the news in VOA Special English.

President Obama's special representative to the Middle East has failed to interest Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in returning to peace talks with Israel. Former Senator George Mitchell met with the Palestinian leader in Ramallah on Friday. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat says that Israel must stop all settlement building in order for Palestinians to return to negotiations. He also said that the talks should continue where they ended with the former Israeli government.

Internet reports say that 15 members of an Islamic extremist group were killed in a suspected American missile attack in Afghanistan. The American company Site Intelligence Group says the Turkistan Islamic Party Web site reported that 13 Chinese Uighurs and 2 Turks died in the missiles strike on Tuesday. Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected American missile attack took place on Tuesday near the countries border with Afghanistan. Pakistani officials said that at least 5 militants were killed in the attack in the Northwest area.

In other news, Afghanistan's President, Hamid Karzai, has banned the use of the chemical ammonium nitrate be chemically used to make bombs. And President Obama told Americans on Friday that he will not stop fighting to fix the economy, create jobs or reform healthcare. Mr. Obama spoke in the Midwestern state of Ohio. He said he understands that lawmakers in Washington, D.C. are trying to understand how the election of a Republican Senator in the state of Massachusetts will change healthcare reform. The election of Scott Brown to the United States Senator gave the Republican Party the number of votes needed to block legislation such as healthcare reform.

And so briefly now here again is the major news of this hour. Two people have been rescued in Haiti after being buried for 10 days in the wreckage of the earthquake. The British government has raised its terror warning level to "severe". And news reports say that a special committee has proposed that more than 30 prisoners at the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba face trial all military courts.

So end this news at this hour in VOA Special English. We thank you are listeners, and we are always at your service.
