Almost one hundred thousand ethnic Uzbeks have gathered at the Uzbek border in southern Kyrgyzstan. They fled their homes to escape ethnic violence that has killed at least one hundred twenty four people. More than one thousand six hundred people have been injured. Witnesses say ethnic Kyrgyz burned Uzbek neighborhoods. Some Kyrgyz say they are defending their country against Uzbeks who want to seize control. The South is a base for former Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. He was ousted April 7th and is living in exile in Belarus. He denies Kyrgyz government accusations that his supporters are to blame for the current violence. A security group led by Russia says it may consider taking military action in Kyrgyzstan. The Collective Security Treaty Organization held an emergency meeting in Moscow on Monday. Russia has sent some troops to protect its air base in Kyrgyzstan. But Russia rejected a request for peace keeping troops from Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva. The United States also has an air base in the country. Both the United States and Russia have offered humanitarian aid.
