A United Nations report says the number of civilians killed or injured in Afghanistan rose 31% in the first half of 2010. The report said that the Taliban and other resistance groups are mostly responsible for the increase. The UN says almost 1300 Afghans were killed in the first 6 months of the year. Another 2000 Afghans were injured. The report said homemade bombs were mainly to blame. It said resistance fighters were responsible for 76% of deaths and injuries up from 53% last year. UN official Staffan de Mistura described the report as a wake-up call.
