A NATO official says 2,000 more troops may be going to Afghanistan. The official spoke to reporters in the Belgian capital, Brussels. He said the request for additional troops came from the commander of international forces in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus. He did not say which of the alliance's 28 members would send the new troops. The international force in Afghanistan already has 140,000 troops. Separately, General Petraeus has criticized a plan by a Christian group to burn copies of Islam’s holy book on September 11th. The general said the planned burning of the Koran is the kind of action the Taliban would use for propaganda purposes. He said it could endanger American troops and damage the war effort in Afghanistan. Hundreds of Afghan's demonstrated in Kabul Monday to protest the plan by the Dove World Outreach center. The protesters shouted death to America as they demonstrated near an Islamic center. Similar protests were held Saturday near the United States embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.
