It is zero hour thirty Universal Time. Here is the news in Special English.

President Obama says he ordered the raid against Osama bin Laden after deciding the risks were worth the possibility of finally getting him. He also said the raid was the longest 40 minutes of his life. Mr. Obama spoke on a television news program Sunday. He said it remains unclear if Pakistan’s government knew that bin Laden was in the country. But he said there needs to be an investigation into the possibility. Also Sunday, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon said the United States can not consider Al-Qaeda defeated. But he says its leader’s death is a really important step in that direction.

The United States says it wants to question 3 wives of Osama bin Laden. Pakistani officials detained the women Monday after American Special Forces killed the Al-Qaeda leader. The women have been hiding with him at a large home in Abbottabad. American National Security Advisor Tom Donilon says Pakistani officials need to provide the United States with intelligence gathered from the home. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani is to report about the raid to the country’s parliament Monday. His government has said it did not know where Osama bin Laden was hiding before the raid that killed him.

Syrian security forces have killed 14 people in the central city of Homs. One of the dead was a 14-year-old boy. 200 people including a 10-year-old boy were also detained in the coastal city of Baniyas. Human rights groups say tanks and troops raided 3 areas of Homs overnight Sunday. The groups say the areas have been guarded since then. On Saturday, troops killed 6 people in Baniyas. Witnesses say at least 25 tanks are on the city streets to prevent anti-government protests. The coastal city has been a center of protests against President Bashar al-Assad. Also Sunday, the Syrian government news agency says armed groups attacked a bus near Homs killing 10 civilians.

The opposition in Libya says shelling by government forces is severely interfering with the flow of aid into the port city of Misrata. It is the only rebel-held area in Libya. A rebel spokesman says the city could run out of food and water within a month. The spokesman says only one shipment of aid is reaching the city each week. He says the city has been receiving 2 to 5 shipments a week until recently. Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi again attacked Misrata Sunday. The 2 sides fought fiercely near the airport. On Saturday, Libyan government forces shelled 4 large oil tanks in Misrata destroying the city’s only fuel supply.

Egypt ’s military rulers have promised strong efforts to end religion related violence. The announcement came after an emergency cabinet meeting held in response to violence Saturday between Christians and Muslims. The military rulers say they will try 190 people detained in connection with religious violence that killed 12 people near Cairo. Witnesses say Muslims attacked a Coptic Christian religions center Saturday because they believed a Christian woman was being held there to prevent her from becoming a Muslim. Other reports said the crowd believed the woman had already changed her religion but was being prevented from marrying a Muslim man. Security forces fired shots into the air and used tear gas to separate the 2 sides. Interfaith relationships are a source of tension in Egypt.

In Bahrain, King Hamad Al Khalifa has ordered an early end to emergency rule that began in March. Bahrain’s state media report that emergency conditions will end on June 1st. At least 14 of 21 accused opposition leaders and political activists have appeared in a special court. They face charges of plotting to oust the king. The government has arrested hundreds of people since the protests. The foreign minister of Iran is meeting officials in the United Arab Emirates. Tensions between Iran and Gulf States have increased since Bahrain’s rulers invited troops from Sunni-led nations to help stop rebellion by mostly Shiite protesters.

Afghan officials say government troops have surrounded a group of Taliban fighters who launched attacks on government buildings in Kandahar. NATO forces are supporting the Afghan troops in the operation. Afghan officials say the militants are hiding in a building near the local headquarters of the Afghan Intelligence Agency. The troops have cleared almost all of the other buildings attacked by the Taliban fighters.

Thousands of demonstrators marched into Mexico City Sunday to demand an end to drug violence. Hundreds of people began the 90 kilometer march in the coastal city Cuernavaca on Thursday. Thousands of others joined along the way. They protested the government’s failure to end the violence. More than 35,000 people have been killed in connection with the illegal drug trade since 2006. That year the Mexican government sent thousands of extra police to the area to try to end the illegal drug trade.

And now, briefly, here again is the major news of the hour.

President Obama says he ordered the raid on Osama bin Laden after deciding the risks were worth finally getting the Al-Qaeda leader. Syrian security forces have killed 14 people in the central city of Homs. And the opposition in Libya says shelling by government forces is severely interfering with the flow of aid into the port city of Misrata.

That’s the news in VOA Special English from Washington.
