United States Army engineers have opened a huge floodgate along the Mississippi River. They hope opening the barrier will prevent disasters flooding in two major Louisiana's cities, New Orleans and the capital, Baton Rouge. The opening Saturday is the first time the Morganza Spillway has been used in more than 30 years. Officials say the opening is slow and controlled to let people leave the area. They also want black bears to have a chance to move to higher ground. But Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal warned people in the way of the flood. Governor Jindal said that water is coming. The officials hope the release of floodwaters will take pressure off barriers farther down the river. That protect Baton Rouge and New Orleans. They also want to help protect oil processing centers and chemical plants along the lower areas of the Mississippi River.
