It is now 00:30 universal time and here is the news in Special English from the Voice of America. I'm Robert Cohen in Washington.

The opposition in Yemen says it signed a deal Saturday that calls for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to transfer power within a month. News reports say Mr. Saleh is expected to sign the agreement Sunday. Plans to sign the agreement have already been delayed twice because of objections by Mr. Saleh. In a speech Saturday, he criticized the agreement as an "illegal ouster". The deal was designed with the help of the American-supported Gulf Cooperation Council. Mr. Saleh warned that if he leaves, al-Qaida could take over parts of the country. Despite his criticism of the deal, he said he would sign it. It promises he will not be punished for any wrongdoing if he transfers power within 30 days of signing it.

Activists in Syria say security forces killed at least five people during a funeral march for anti-government protesters. The activists say the deaths came after Syrian forces fired on tens of thousands of people Saturday in the central city of Homs. Syria's National Organization for Human Rights says security forces killed 44 people Friday in Homs, and in the western province of Idlib. The Syrian government has blamed armed groups for the violence. It reported 17 deaths Friday in Idlib and Homs. The government has repeatedly blamed the unrest on armed groups. None of the reports can be independently confirmed. Syria has banned foreign reporters from the country.

The French foreign ministry says Libyan rebels have freed four French citizens. The rebels suspected the four of spying. The ministry says the four men were brought to Egypt and released to French officials there. The Frenchmen worked for a private security company. They were detained by rebels in the Libyan town of Benghazi late last week. A fifth member of the group was shot and later died of his wounds. He was the chief of the security company. Separately, angry Libyans attacked a bus carrying foreign reporters in the city of Zawiya Saturday. News reports said the Libyans were angry about a continued lack of fuel. The reporters were not harmed.

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara says it is time for Ivorians to come together and celebrate peace. He spoke at a swearing in ceremony that was delayed more than six months when the former president refused to leave office. Mr. Ouattara said it was a historic moment for Ivory Coast. He praised what he called the "victory of democarcy". Thousands of people gathered for the ceremony. United Nations tanks and Ivorian forces provided security for the event. More than 20 foreign diplomats and heads of state attended the ceremony Saturday in the capital, Yamoussoukro. Those attending included United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

South Africa's ruling African National Congress party has easily won local elections. However, the opposition increased the number of votes it received. The results were released Saturday from the voting on Wednesday. The ANC received 62 percent of the votes. In the last local elections in 2006, it received 66 percent of the votes. The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, received 24 percent of the votes. In 2006, the alliance received 16 percent. The Democratic Alliance is supported by white and mixed-race voters. Fifty-eight percent of voters cast ballots. Elections were held in 278 local areas. The African National Congress party has led South Africa since the end of apartheid 17 years ago.

Thousands of protesters have gathered in the Georgian capital to demand the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili. Opposition leader Mikhail Saakashvili said Saturday that the gathering is the beginning of a fight. She led the protesters to the headquarters of state television where they demanded to be given air time. The opposition says Mr. Saakashvili does not listen to Georgian citizens. Opponents protested against him for weeks in 2009, then opposition leaders accused Mr. Saakashvili of undemocratic practices.

An American man who owns a group of religious radio stations says the beginning of the end of the world will start a little more than two hours from now. Most people are laughing at the prediction. Eighty-nine-year-old Harold Camping says the numbers in the Christian holy book called the Bible show that May 21 will be the first day of Judgement. He also says the destruction of the world will take place five months later on October 21.

Briefly, here again is the major news of the hour.

The opposition in Yemen says it signed a deal Saturday that calls for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to transfer power within a month. Mr. Saleh is not happy with the deal, but says he will sign it even though he calls the agreement announce to in his words an "illegal ouster". Activists in Syria say security forces killed at least five people during a funeral march for anti-government protesters. The Syrian government is blaming armed groups for the unrest and violence. Thousands of protesters have gathered in the Georgian capital to demand the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili.

And in late news, the horse named Animal Kingdom came in second in the race known as the Preakness Stakes. The horse won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. But on Saturday, Animal Kingdom lost to a horse named Shackleford. The race was run at Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland.

And from Washington, D.C., that's the news in Voice of America Special English.
