It is 00:30 universal time. Now here is the news in VOA Special English. I'm Christopher Cruise in Washington.

Officials say a suicide bomber attacked a religious center in northwestern Pakistan. At least 48 people were killed. The attack happened as more than 300 people crowded into the mosque in Jamrud, for Friday prayers. Jamrud is the main town in the Khyber tribal area. Officials say at least 100 people were wounded and the building was heavily damaged. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack. He also expressed his regret to families of the victims for their losses. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Suicide bombers have attacked Britain's cultural center in the Afghan capital Kabul. Nine people have been killed in the fighting, including a NATO soldier. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Friday marked the 92nd anniversary of independence from Britain. The raid on the British Council offices began when one militant exploded a car filled with bombs outside the main entrance. Another suicide bomber carried out an attack inside the entrance. Three other militants also got inside the entrance and fought with Afghan security forces for eight hours. NATO forces answered with support to the Afghan police and troops. The attack ended when all of the militants were killed.

Security forces in Syria killed at least 19 people Friday after firing on anti-government demonstrators. Rights groups say most of the deaths took place in the southern Dara' area. They say Syrian forces also shot and killed protesters near Damascus and the central Homs. Thousands of protesters demonstrated across Syria Friday calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign. On Thursday, international pressure against Mr. Assad increased. The United States, the European Union and several other Western countries, made their first call for Mr. Assad to resign.

Libyan rebels say they have seized control of the western town of Zlitan, after intense fighting with forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The rebels said they had pushed into the center of the town, about 150 kilometers from Tripoli. The claim could not be confirmed. The rebels also said at least 30 fighters were killed in fighting between the two sides. The rebels have been pushing toward the capital, Tripoli.

The United Nations-supported court investigating the 2005 death of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has widened its investigation. The court said Friday that it will look into the killing of former Communist Party chief George Hawi that same year. The group will also investigate a 2004 murder attempt on the former telecommunications minister Marwan Hamadeh, and it will also look into an attempt on the life of former Deputy Prime Minister Elias Murr the next year.

You're listening to the news in VOA Special English live from Washington.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis have gathered to support the newly formed opposition "national council." Pro-reform demonstrators marched in the streets of the capital, Sana'a, and the southern city of Taiz on Friday. Government media reports say a pro-government gathering also took place in the capital. Protesters have been calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign since January. Mr. Saleh says he will return to Yemen "soon." He has been recovering in Saudi Arabia from injuries he received last June when his presidential headquarters was attacked.

The Indian activist Anna Hazare told his supporters Friday that they are launching what could be a new "revolution." Mr. Hazare has began a 15-day hunger strike to demand stronger anti-corruption laws. The activist spoke to several thousands of supporters in New Delhi as they gathered for the strike. Earlier, the 74-year-old Mr. Hazare visited a memorial to honor Mahatma Gandhi. Police jailed Anna Hazare and more than 1,000 of his followers Tuesday after he refused police demands to limit his protest.

In India, police say suspected Maoist rebels have killed 11 police officers in the eastern Bijapur area of Chhattisgarh state. Police say Maoists attacked police as they guarded the area. At least five rebels were killed in the gunfight. Chhattisgarh is the center of the Maoist rebellion that has now spread to 20 Indian states. The rebels say they are fighting for farmers who do not own land and for tribes who do not agree with the state government's attempts to develop industries on tribal land.

And finally of this hour, security officials in Somalia say a pilotless airplane has crashed in Mogadishu. Officials told the VOA Somali Service that the plane crashed Friday into a home near the Libyan Embassy in the southwestern Hodan area. The officials said unidentified men and African Union troops removed the wreckage. The United States has not publicly commented on reports that it uses pilotless planes to gather information in Somalia.

Now briefly, here again is the major news of the hour in VOA Special English. A suicide bomb attack at a religious center in northwestern Pakistan has killed 48 people, and at least 100 people were wounded. Rights groups say security forces in Syria killed at least 19 anti-government protesters on Friday. And Libyan rebels say they have seized control of the western town of Zlitan, after intense fighting with forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

And that's the news in VOA Special English. I'm Christopher Cruise in Washington.
