It is 00:30 universal time. I'm Fritzi Bowden Hymer in Washington.

An American official says al-Qaida's number two leader, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan. The official, who asked not to be identified, told Western media Saturday that the al-Qaida leader was killed on August 22. He said he was killed in the northwestern tribal area of Waziristan. The officials did not say how Atiyah Abd al-Rahman was killed. However, on August 22, Pakistani security officials said that an American airstrike had killed four suspected militants near the town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan.

Hundreds of militants from Afghanistan have attacked Pakistani guard stations near the Afghan border. Pakistani officials say 26 security workers and 10 border police were killed in the fighting Saturday. At least nine militants were also killed. Offcials say the attacks started in the village of Arando, in the northwestern area of Chitral. Militants then attacked more areas near the border. The Pakistani military says it sent additional forces to fight off the attackers. Border raids have increased tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent months. Both nations are fighting increased attacks by the Taliban and al-Qaida-linked militants.

Libyan rebels say they have gained control of a border station near Tunisia, and they continue to fight for control of the western city of Zuwarah. Opposition fighters faced strong resistance Saturday from forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi in their efforts to gain control of Zuwarah. A major supply route to Tripoli crosses the city, which is about 50 kilometers from the Tunisian border. Separately, many Libyans in Tripoli do not have electricity or running water. The spokesman for the Transitional National Council said Saturday that the group hoped to make the difficult period as short as possible.

Syria's closest ally, Iran, is calling on the Syrian government to listen to the people's demands. Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi made the comments Saturday. They are the first reaction from Iran since the protests against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began five months ago. Mr. Salehi warned of danger for the whole area if the crisis in Syria could not be solved peacefully. He said a lack of leadership in Syria would cause very serious problems for its neighbors. Syrian activists say forces loyal to Mr. Assad have again attacked anti-government protesters. At least two people died in the fighting in cities across the country. The Syrian government has denied reports of protests in the capital. The government-operated SANA news agency says foreign news organizations are inventing stories.

At least 25 people have been killed in northern Iraq when a vehicle hit a bus. Iraqi police say the accident happened Saturday near Kirkuk, about 280 kilometers north of Baghdad. Police say the bus caught fire after the crash and passengers were trapped inside. At least one person in the car was also killed.

Hurricane Irene continues to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the east coast of the United States. Officials say at least four people have been killed by the storm. The hurricane first struck land in the state of North Carolina Saturday. Winds of almost 140 kilometer per hour flooded streets and brought down trees. Almost one million homes and businesses are without electrical power. The storm has weakened, but weather experts say it is expected to pass through many large cities — including New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington. It is moving north-northeast at 24 kilometers per hour. Earlier Saturday, President Obama visited the center where high level emergency officials are meeting. He warned that the situation would remain dangerous for 72 hours.

In India, activist Anna Hazare says he will end his nearly two-week hunger strike to demand stronger anti-corruption legislation. Mr. Hazare said Saturday he will start eating again on Sunday morning. The announcement came after lawmakers from India's ruling Congress party and main opposition group held a special parliamentary meeting to deal with the hunger strike. The lawmakers supported a proposal by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The proposal calls for creation of an independent agency to observe politicians and government officials. Earlier Saturday, Mr. Mukherjee urged lawmakers to find a solution to the many cases of corruption in India. These have included financial wrong doing during last year's Commonwealth Games and a sale of telecommunication permits at prices below normal market costs.

In Singapore, Former Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan has been elected president in a recount. Election officials said Sunday that Mr. Tan won by just over 7,000 votes. The officials ordered the second count because there was less than one percentage point between him and medical doctor Tan Cheng Bock. Political observers said the election was a test of the ruling People's Action Party. The Singapore presidency is mainly ceremonial.

Briefly here again is the major news of the hour.

An American official says al-Qaida's second most important leader, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan. Hundreds of militants have attacked Pakistani guard stations near the Afghan border. And Hurricane Irene is bringing strong winds and heavy rains to the eastern part of the United States.
