It is zero hour thirty Universal Time. Here , now the news in VOA Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise reporting live from the VOA news center in Washington.

The president of the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas has asked the United Nations to recognize a state of Palestine. Mr. Abbas spoke to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday. He called Israel an occupying power and he called Israel’s control of Palestinian areas a policy of colonial settlement occupation. Israel and the United States opposed the Palestinian appeal for an independent state. The Israeli government says the request dose not help the Middle East peace process. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu followed Mr. Abbas’s speech. He said peace talks should begin immediately at the UN if both parties are serious about reaching an agreement. Also Friday, the United States, the European Union, Russia and United Nations called for the 2 sides to begin peace talks. Palestinians shouted their approval Friday as Mr. Abbas asked for a Palestinian statehood. Thousands of people crowded city centers across the West Bank to watch huge televisions as their leader spoke to the UN General Assembly.

Pakistan ’s army chief is dismissing American accusations that its military spy agency supports al-Qaeda-linked militants. General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani denied that Pakistan is carrying on a war in Afghanistan. He also denied that the country’s spy agency supports the al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani militant group. General Parvez condemned earlier comment by the chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff. He said Admiral Mike Mullen’s accusations were not based on fact. On Thursday, Admiral Mullen said the Haqqani network is what he called a veritable arm of the Pakistani intelligence services. Also Friday, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said of the United States they can not live with us and they can not live without us.

Libya ’s National Transitional Council says it will announce plans for the country’s new government within the next few days. An NTC spokesman said Friday that the new government will include 22 ministries and a deputy prime minister. Also Friday, NTC fighters attacked the hometown of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. They attacked the coastal town of Sirte with heavy artillery in an attempt to force out Gaddafi’s supporters. NTC fighters are also battling pro-Gaddafi forces in the town of Bani Walid. And Mr. Gaddafi’s daughter Aisha on Friday released a recording that says her father is feeling well and fighting next to his supporters. It is still not known where Mr. Gaddafi is.

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has urged Turkey and Iran to stop bombing northern Iraq’s Kurdistan area. Suspected Kurdish rebels are believed to be operating in the area. Mr. Talabani spoke to the Unite Nations General Assembly on Friday. He called on Turkey and Iran to use diplomacy and communication to ease tensions with Kurdish rebels.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran is talking to Russia about building another nuclear power center. Iran has 1 nuclear power center now. It is the Russian-built Bushehr center which was started earlier this year. Mr. Ahmadinejad says Iran needs 20 times more energy than the Bushehr center supplies. He also invited other countries to send proposals to build new power centers in Iran. The United Nations Security Council has placed restrictions on Iran for its uranium enrichment activities and its refusal to work with international inspectors. Iran says its nuclear program is used only for energy.

Syrian security forces shot and killed at least 3 civilians on Friday. Syrian activists say government forces clashed with thousands of demonstrators across the country after Friday prayers. Also Friday, the Syrian government accused what it called armed terrorists of killing 5 security workers. The state-controlled SANA news agency said gunmen fired on a military bus about 100 kilometers from Damascus. And separately, the European Union has taken a new action against the Syrian government. Foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said Friday the new measures will support an earlier ban on Syrian crude oil that began this month. The measures also include a ban on the release of bank notes to the Syrian central bank and travel ban on several individuals connected to the Syrian government.

In Zambia, longtime opposition leader Michael Sata has been sworn in as president. He defeated President Rupiah Banda 43 to 36%. In the capital Lusaka, Mr. Sata promised to help the nation’s poor and to fight corruption. And he promised foreign investors that they are welcomed in the country. But he said they must improve conditions for workers.

And officials in Mexico say 11 more bodies have been found in and around the Gulf coast city of Veracruz. The bodies were found days after criminals left remains of 35 bodies in the area. Officials say the 11 bodies were found Thursday. It is not clear who was responsible for releasing them around Veracruz or whether the 2 incidents were linked.
