Thousands of Egyptian Coptic Christians have attended a funeral for protesters killed in fighting with security forces in Cairo Sunday. Mourners gathered in the cities of the Shiite Christian center for the service. A leader of the service called on Christians to deny themselves food and to pray for peace for 3 days. At least 25 people were killed in the battles Sunday. Most of victims were Christians. At least 3 soldiers were also killed. The demonstrators were protesting a recent attack on a Coptic Christian church in southern Egypt. A Coptic church statement says its followers have suffered repeated problems in Egypt. It says those who are responsible have gone unpunished.

Bomb explosions in the Iraq’s capital have killed at least 10 people and wounded 19 others. The explosions happened just minutes apart in western Baghdad. Officials said the first one was the result of a roadside bomb. The second bomb exploded as emergency service vehicles arrived to help victims and a third bomb exploded nearby moments later.

Syria ’s top Sunni Muslim clergyman has warned other countries against military intervention in Syria. Grand Mufti Badreddin Hassoun says such action could result in suicide bombings against the United State and Europe. He said suicide bombers are already in Europe and America and would be prepared to act if Syria or Lebanon is bombed. Badreddin Hassoun’s comments follow an earlier warning by Syrian foreign minister Walid al-Moallem. He said Syria would take strong measures against any country that recognizes the newly formed opposition Syrian National Council. In Paris Monday, the European Union welcomed the creation of the opposition group. French foreign minister Alain Juppe also met with its leader.

The leader of Libya’s temporary government says rebel forces have surrounded forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi in the former Libyan leader’s hometown of Sirte. On Sunday, National Transitional Council chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil said he expected to control Sirte within a week. NTC fighters claim to control the hospital and former headquarters of Muammar Gaddafi in Sirte. NTC officials say they will be able to announce a complete victory when they control Sirte because they will control all of Libya’s ports and harbors.

Belgium will buy the Belgian part of the troubled European bank Dexia for 5.4 billion dollars. The governments of France, Luxemburg and Belgium also have said they will provide 121 billion dollars in loan guarantees for Dexia for up to 10 years. Qatar’s ruling family has said it would pay 1.4 billion dollars for Dexia’s Luxemburg division. Dexia was severely damaged by holding too much debt from Greece, Italy and some local American governments. The French, Luxemburg and Belgian governments agreed to sell some successful parts of Dexia to try to prevent its failure.

An investigated judge has resigned from the United Nations-led court trying Khmer Rouge leaders in Cambodia. Siegfried Blunk of Germany accused Cambodian government of interfering with the work of the court. The court released a statement Monday. It said Judge Blunk resigned because public statements by Cambodian officials created concern about the honesty of 2 current investigations. Mr. Blunk already has been accused of surrendering to political pressure in connection with his work.

China has suspended shipping on the Mekong River. Last Wednesday, attackers hijacked 2 boats on the river and killed 13 sailors. They are believed to be illegal drug sellers. The attack happened on a part of the river near where it borders Thailand, Burma, Laos and China. Much illegal drug trade activity takes place in the same area. Thai forces later found the hijack boats. A large amount of the illegal drug methamphetamine was on the boats. One of the hijackers was reported killed in a shootout with Thai forces. The rest escaped.

NATO-led forces in Afghanistan have criticized Pakistan for failing to stop Pakistani-based militant groups that operate in Afghanistan. Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson spoke about the subject Monday. He said Pakistan has done a lot and paid for its actions in blood. But he said it needs to do more. General Jacobson said Pakistan must block militants from organizing on its own territory.

Deep sea explorers say they have found the wreck of British ship that sank during World War 1. The SS Mantola was carrying a huge load of silver. The finder Odyssey Marine Exploration says it plans to bring the British ship and its missing treasure to dry land. A German underwater explosive hit and sank the Mantola in 1917. It was estimated to be carrying 600,000 ounces of silver which would now be worth 19 million dollars. Odyssey Marine Exploration says it has an agreement with the British government. The company is permitted to keep 80% of the value of Mantola’s treasure.

Italian writer Roberto Saviano has won the Pen/Pinter International Writer of Courage Award. Mr. Saviano is the writer of the 2006 book Gomorra about organized crimes in Naples Italy. As a result, Mr. Saviano now lives in hiding with police protection. Millions of copies of Gomorra have been sold and the book was even made into a movie. Mr. Saviano sent a message of thanks to Pen/Pinter. He also wrote that the prize belongs to his readers. He shares the 2011 award with British playwright David Hare. Mr. Hare said he hopes the recognition will make Mr. Saviano’s life easier.
