•It is 23 hours 30 universal time here now the news in VOA Special English and Christopher Cruise reporting live from the VOA news center in Washington.

•Tens of thousands of people gathered in Moscow and other cities across Russia Saturday. They were protesting the results of Sunday's parliamentary elections, which were won by the ruling United Russia party. They say the party cheated to win. Police said at least 20,000 demonstrators gathered in the * square across the river from the Kremlin. Organizers said there were 50,000. At least, 7000 people gathered in St. Petersburg and hundreds of people gathered in the Pacific port city of Vladivostok. The protests have also been reported in several cities in Siberia.

•The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has criticized the former presidential candidate *. The opposition leader declared himself president after President Joseph Kabila was named the official winner of last week's election. Congo's information minister says Mr. Chess Academy is acting responsibly and illegally. The country's electoral commission said Friday that Mr. Kabila had received 49% of the votes. Mr. Chess Academy received 32%, but he told VOA that he considers himself the country's elected president.

•In West Africa, Ivory Coast will hold its first parliamentary elections in more than 10 years on Sunday. The election commission says there are almost 1000 candidates running for the 255 seats. Some observers believe members of Pres. Allis's Democratic Party will win most of the seats.

•Three women who fought injustice oppression and sexual violence against women were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize Saturday. Liberian Pres. Ellen Johnson became Africa's first democratically elected female president in 2005. She has been praised for her efforts to bring peace to Liberia and to strengthen the position of women there. Liberian peace activist Lehman Boley helped her country's 14 year-long civil war by urging women to join nonviolent demonstrations. And * Carmen is a Yemeni women's rights activist and journalist, and the first Arab woman to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize. At 32 years old she is the youngest person to receive the award. She was praised for trying to improve women's rights in Yemen and for working for democracy and peace in the country.

•Activists say Syrian forces killed at least four people when they fired on protesters who had gathered Saturday at a funeral for a child. The activists say the violence in the northwestern * Province was one of the several attacks Saturday. At least three people were killed in other areas of the country, and three civilians were killed in the central Homle area after a gun battle at the security station. Witnesses say Syria has sent more forces into the Homle area. Antigovernment activists are calling for a nationwide strike beginning Sunday.

•Yemen's vice president has urged members of the new unity government to forget their political differences. Abdul Rob monster hobby spoke on Saturday after the new government was sworn. The state operated the Sava news agency reported that the vice president said the government's first job is to create an environment where compromise can take place. The unity government will govern human as the country prepares for a presidential election in February.

•A top Pakistani Taliban leader says the militant group has started peace talks with the government. Deputy Taliban's commander Maulvi Funkier Mohammed spoke to reporters on Saturday. He said the talks were going well. And he said the group may soon sign a peace agreement. The Taliban leader said the government has released many of his fighters. And he says the militants have answered that move by stopping their attacks. The government of Pakistan and the Pakistani Taliban have reached peace deals before, but they did not last long.

•Palestinian leaders are denouncing comments by a top American presidential candidate in an interview with the Jewish channel cable television station New Gingrich said Palestinians are uninvited people. The former Speaker of the House of Representatives said historically there was in his words no Palestine as a state. And they said the Palestinian people were Arabs. On Saturday, Palestinian Prime Minister Salaam Fayed condemned Mr. Gingrich's comments. Chief Palestinian negotiator Areca said the comments were what he called despicable and racist. And Hamas spokesman * said the comments were called for an ethnic cleaning of Palestinians.

•Finally at this hour, a 14-year-old boy kidnapped by people believed to be Muslim militants in the Philippines has been released. The boy had been held for five months in July government kidnapped him and his Philippine American mother and a family member on an island near the city of *. His mother and the family member were freed in October. Philippine officials say the American teenager is now being cared for by a top official on the southern island of Buzzyloan.
