  2. Syria's officials say two suicide bombings in Damascus killed at least 44 people and injured at least 150 others. State television says two bombers used vehicles filled with explosives to attack state security officers on Friday. Syria's state operated news agency SANA released pictures that it said showed victims of what it called terrorist attacks. Witnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire after the explosions. Syrian officials said Al Qaeda militants may be responsible for the bombings. Separately, some Arab League observers or preparing for a larger group of observers who are set to arrive in Syria on Monday. The Arab League has been urging Syria to withdraw its security forces from neighborhoods, and begin talks with the opposition.
  3. Thousands of Egyptians demonstrated in Carlo and other cities Friday. The protesters want the country's military rulers to apologize for recent violence against female protesters. They also want the military to speed up its plans to give power to a civilian government. The military Council has said it regrets the violence against women. The Council also said it would take legal action against those responsible for the abuse. 
  4. Several thousand Iraqis have demonstrated in Sunni Muslim areas to protest against Prime Minister Nuri *. The protest took place a day after bombings across Baghdad killed at least 69 people. The protests have also come during the growing political crisis involving Mr. Malike, who is a Shiite and Iraq's Sunni vice president *.
  5. The husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth has been taken to the hospital for what are being called chest pains. Prince Philip is 90 years old he is also called the Duke of Edinburgh has been known for his good health and strong opinions. A spokeswoman for the Royal family says the prince was taken to a hospital in Cambridge on Friday for tests. She did not give any more information.  
  6. The former Yugoslav Republic of Croatia, a coalition government has been sworn in ending eight years of conservative rule. Sauron Milano as the SDP party and its 22-member cabinet were sworn-in Friday in the capital Zagreb. Mr. Milunovich is 45 years old is the country's youngest prime minister since the country gained independence in 1991. He spoke to the new 151-member parliament. It told him the country is facing difficult economic challenges as it will prepare for entry into the European Union in 2013. Croatia has on the unemployment rate of almost 17% and a large amount of debt.

  8. World leaders were in Prague Friday for the funeral of *, the former president of the Czechoslovakia Republic that is now called the Czech Republic. He died in his sleep breathing problems on Sunday. Since Monday tens of thousands of Czechs have remembered the country's first democratically elected president. Many walked past his remains inside the religious center in Prague. 
  9. Turkey has reacted angrily to a vote in the lower house of the French Parliament. The lower house approved a bill making it a crime to publicly deny as genocide the killings of Armenians during Ottoman rule in Turkey. On Friday, the Turkish prime minister * accused France of genocide in Algeria more than 60 years ago. he said French colonialists killed 15% of Algeria's population starting in 1944. 
  10. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, opposition leader Atienza * has called the government's actions against him "idiocy." He spoke to VOA on Friday. He said government security forces killed eight of his supporters as they gathered at * Stadium in the capital Kinshasa. His supporters went to the sports center for Mr. Chester * self-declared swearing-in ceremony as the country's new president. The claim of eight deaths could not be independently verified. 
  11. Eleven people were killed in an explosion at an oil pipeline in western Columbia early Friday. At least 70 others were hurt. The explosion happened in the * area, west of the capital Bogota. The cause of the explosion is being investigated. Some reports are blaming it on criminals who were trying to steal the oil. The explosion destroyed or damaged many homes. Colombian President Francisco SANTOS called the explosion a great tragedy. Colombia's national oil company operates the pipeline. 
  12. And finally at this hour the United States Congress has agreed to extend the cut on payroll taxes. The House of Representatives approved the extension during the short meeting on Friday. The House action also continues the payment of government assistance for the unemployed. The Senate approved the bill last week. And Friday at the White House, President Obama signed the legislation into law then left for Hawaii for a vacation. Before he left he said the economy is improving but not as quickly as necessary. Lawmakers must now negotiate the terms of a planned one-year extension of the tax cuts.
