  1. It is 23 hours 30 universal time, here now the news in VOA Special English. I'm * reporting live from Washington.
  2. There have been more clashes between Egyptian soldiers and thousands of angry soccer funs in the northern city of * on the Mediterranean coast. One young man is dead and 68 people have been wounded. Large protests began late Friday and continued into Saturday after the Egyptian football Association banned the almost 3 club for two seasons. The Association is also close the * Sports Center for three years. The moves came in response to the deadly riot of a soccer match last month 74 people died.
  3. Activist reported heavy shelling again in the Syrian city of Homs on Saturday. The British-based Syrian Observatory for human rights says at least three people were killed in the * area of Homs. And nearby town of *. The group says at least one person was also killed in clashes in the * province.
  4. Turkish officials say security forces killed 15 rebels Kurdish all of them women during clashes Saturday. The Interior Ministry says the women were members of the Turkish rebel group the Kurdistan Workers Party or PKK. The clashes happened in the southeastern part of the country in a mostly Kurdish problems.
  5. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged North Korea to reconsider its plan to launch a long distance missile next month. Mr. Bon discusses the issue during a meeting with South Korean Pres. Lee on Saturday. The UN chief is in Seoul to attend the nuclear security summit which starts on Monday. It is being held as North Korea threatens to stop progress toward nuclear disarmament. The North says it plans to launch a long-distance rocket next month. Last week the United States said the rocket launch would cancel an earlier agreement to give North Korea food aid. The aid is to be given in exchange for the North halting its nuclear and long distance missile programs. President Obama has arrived in South Korea for the nuclear security summit. He will join more than 50 world leaders there. Mr. Obama will visit the neutral area between North and South Korea early Sunday.

  7. The leaders of the rebellion in Mali are calling for calm. State run television broadcast a statement Saturday by * the leader of the rebels. It was an effort to dismiss reports that Mr. * had been killed. He said his main goal was to keep Mali's territorial borders and the security of people and their property. On Wednesday soldiers took control of the home of the president of Mali. They said they were angry with the way President * has dealt with ethnic Torre rebellion in the north. Video from Mali's capital shows a lot of stealing and rioting. Some people are afraid to go out and or accusing soldiers of stealing their goods at gunpoint. VOA's looker is monitoring the situation from the *. Mali's future looks more uncertain than ever. President * has not seen or heard from publicly since Thursday. Rumors are flying that countercoup in the works. Northern strongholds are bracing for a fight ethnic Tuareg separatists pushed out. But local residents nearing soldiers have eluded the presidential palace gas stations and shops.
  8. The African Union is sending 5000 soldiers to join the hunt for Joseph Cody the leader of the Lord's resistance army. The operation was launched in South Sudan on Saturday. They said that the African Union and United Nations officials said the operation will continue until the warlord is caught or killed. Joseph Cody and his LRA are accused of rape, torture, and forcing children to become soldiers and sex slaves. He and several of his aides have been wanted by the international criminal court since 2005.
  9. Six astronauts at the international space station had to hide inside escape containers cold palms Saturday, as a piece of space wreckage flew dangerously close to the station. The American space agency NASA said this is the third time of the space station crew has had to seek shelter because of orbiting space junk. The Russian space agency said the piece from a Russian rocket passed within 23 km at that distance NASA said the astronauts were not at risk. But it said it had them take shelter make sure they were safe in case they were hit. After the space junk passed and the astronauts returned to their normal duties.
  10. And finally at this hour. Pope Benedict met with Mexican Pres. Felipe Calderon on Saturday. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church is beginning of a five-day trip to Latin America that will also take him to Cuba. The pope started his day by celebrating of private mass at Mira Flores college in the central Mexican city of Lyon. He planned a meeting with the Mexican leader at the state government house and the gathering was children in the city's piece square. On Sunday, the pope will say mass outdoors before what is expected to be a huge crowd in Lyon.
  11. And now briefly here again is the major news of the hour in VOA special English. The head of the UN is urging North Korea to reconsider its plan to launch a long-distance missile next month. There have been more clashes between Egyptian soliders and thousands of angry soccer fans in the Northern city of port XXX on the xxx coast. One young man is dead and 68 people have been wounded. Large protest began late Friday and continued into Saturday after the Egyptian Football Association banned the XXX club for two seasons. The Association also closed the port XXX sport center for 3 years. The move came in reponse to the dealy riot at a soccer match last month( ??), 74 people dead.
