  1. It is 23 hours 30 universal time here now the news in VOA Special English. I'm * reporting live from Washington.
  2. The former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan says the Syrian government must an active cease-fire immediately. A spokesman for Mr. Annan spoke Friday is new violence was reported in Syria. The spokesman did not say what action would be taken of the unrest continues. American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Salvi Arabia for talks aimed to pressure Mr. Assad to end the violence.
  3. President Obama will be decided Friday to place restrictions on foreign banks that do business with Iran's central bank. The President decided there is enough oil in the world market that American allies will not be hurt if they stop buying oil from Iran. The restriction goes into effect in late June. European nations are also planning to end purchases of oil from Iran beginning in July. State Department spokesman * "Certainly in a couple weeks ago in those countries that we believe have made substantial progress in this indicate that was confident that we can do this in a very coherent delivers fashion that's not going to affect the market." The goal is to pressure Iran to stop its nuclear program. Western nations say Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, but Iran says its nuclear work is a force of civilian purposes.
  4. Tens of thousands of Pakistani women and children have fled their homes in the northwestern tribal area near Afghanistan. Many of them are at the * camp run by the United Nations refugee agency near Peshawar. The Pakistanis are afraid of being caught in the military's campaign to force the rebels from the tribal area. Spokesman for the refugee agency said more than 100,000 people have arrived in the camp since the start of the year. Spokesman said almost half of them had come in just the past two weeks. Almost 2000 families arrive at the camp every day.
  5. In Turkey, lawmakers have approved of the disputed education bill that allows middle school students to attend religion classes. The law was approved on Friday. 295 lawmakers voted to approve the bill 91 voted against it. Many Turks fear that the government of Prime Minister * is trying to reestablish the Islamic religion in public education, and bring religion into government. Opponents of the change protested four days in some Turkish cities.
  6. French president * says police have detained 19 people in raids on suspected Islamist extremists. Mr. * said weapons were seized during the raids Friday in the city of Toulouse and other places. The raids come after serious killings around the Toulouse area by an Islamic extremist Mohammed Maroc.

  8. Finance ministers from the 17 nations that use the euro agreed Friday to add another $500 billion for possible financial rescues. That brings the amount available for financial rescues to more than 29835 trillion. Europe has already spent tens of billions of dollars on financial rescues for Greece and one each for Ireland and Portugal. The increase in rescue money is aimed at protecting against economic collapse if Spain and Italy failed to repay the loans.
  9. The leader of the group of soldiers that overthrew Mali civilian government * says the military will continue the country's trade agreements. Mr. * spoke to VOA by telephone on Friday. He said Mali is a part of the economic community of West African states or ECWAS. And he said the country needs international support in its fight against * rebels. He said he was unhappy that the planned meeting between his representatives and African leaders did not take place.
  10. A court in France has for the first time approved the transport of suspect to Rwanda to face charges in that countries genocide in 1994. The Court in the city * ruled that * can be sent to Rwanda. His lawyer says her client did not take part in the genocide and she says he fears he would not receive a fair trial in Rwanda. France has sent Rwandan citizens to * to face trial at the international Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, but until now it has never sent anyone to Rwanda.
  11. And finally at this hour, the United Nations is reporting new violence by the Lord's resistance army. The UN's refugee agency says 13 LRA attacks have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo since March 6. Most of the attacks reportedly were in the * territory. The agency said two people were killed and 13 others were kidnapped including the child. This year LRA attacks in northeastern Congo forced more than 4000 people from their home.
