  1. It is zero hours 30 universal time and here is the news in special English. Syria's ambassador to the United Nations says his country wants a written guarantee that other countries in the area will not interfere in Syria's affairs. Bishara Jeffreys said the threat to negotiator Kofi Annan's peace plan does not come from Syria he said it comes from countries like Saudi Arabia, Qartar, and Turkey. He says they are giving money and arms to the opposition he is concerned that these countries will try to influence what happens in Syria. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Syria's conflict is worsening. He said attacks by government forces on civilian areas show no sign of decreasing. Mr. Ban spoke to the UN Gen. assembly Thursday late.
  2. Obama administration has defended meetings in Washington between American officials and members of Egypt's Islamist party the Muslim brotherhood. White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Thursday the United States is talking with many of Egypt's developing political groups. He said the officials who met with the Muslim brotherhood are workers at the national security agency who do not decide on policies. He described them as low level. Mr. Carney said he did not know what was discussed at the meetings, but he promised that attention was paid to democracy and human rights.
  3. A federal judge in the United States has sentenced Russian * to 25 years in prison on terrorism charges. The judge called * a dangerous man who had attempted to sell missiles to Colombian rebels. * was called a merchant of death by government lawyers. During the sentencing he shouted that the charges against him were alive. He could have been sentenced to life in prison. His lawyers said they will ask other judges to review the sentence. Federal prosecutors said in court that * weapons sales help to worsen wars in Africa. They said he was planning to sell surface to air missiles to Colombian rebels to used to shoot down American helicopters.
  4. A retired Greek man who killed himself in Athens main square said he was going to take his life because government budget cuts had left him without any money to live on. The retired medical chemist placed a note by his body before shooting himself Wednesday morning. Greek newspapers published parts of the note the suicide of 77-year-old Dmitry Crystal Lewis has quickly come to represent the issues of those protesting government economic policies. Protesters and police clashed in Athens Thursday. Protesters call the suicide a government murder.

  6. Ethnic * rebels in Mali have declared a cease-fire after seizing three towns in the north. The separatist national movement for the liberation of * declared the cease-fire on Thursday. They say they have reached their goal. The Tuareg rebels along with Islamist fighters seized the cities of *, * and Timbuktu over three days beginning last Friday. It is not clear if the Islamist militant group * will honor the cease-fire. The Islamist group has already declared Islamic law in some areas seized over the three-day offensive. Tuareg rebels want the northern area of Mali as a separate and independent homeland.
  7. Medical officials in Malawi say 78-year-old president Bingle Carrico has been taken to a hospital in the capital Lilongwe. The president is not awake or able to hear or answer his doctors. Diplomatic sources say he collapsed early Thursday after suffering a heart problem. VP Joyce Banda asked Malawians to stay united as they pray for a quick recovery for president Carrico. She did not provide details about his medical condition. Ms. Banda spoke to the voice of America. Mr. Carrico was elected in 2004. He won a second term in 2009. Critics say he has become increasingly oppressive.
  8. The United States has provided 29855 billion in humanitarian aid to Horn of Africa countries since early last year. On Thursday, it said it will send more. The announcement comes two days after a lower than average rainfall was predicted for the area. The lack of rain could severely affect the growth of crops in the area. The American government said Thursday it will provide almost $50 million in additional aid to refugees and to areas affected by drought in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The three countries are still suffering from a severe drought last year. It caused a famine in several parts of southern Somalia. Thousands died and tens of thousands of Somalis left their homes to find food and water in camps in Mogadishu or in refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia.
  9. Finally this news, the Internet search company Google is showing what the very near future might look like the company has released a product called project glass. It is a pair of glasses that are connected to the Internet the new glasses were shown in New York City. The glasses permit users to talk with others on the Internet while they walk see maps and directions and even find out if an underground train station is close. The glasses can take pictures and can let wearers know if a friend is near. They can also tell where the nearest coffee shop is. Google says the new glasses are being tested and cannot yet be bought. The company is looking for ideas on other ways to use the glasses it also wants to hear about privacy and how people who wear glasses to help them see better could use the Google glasses.
