  1. Here is the news in VOA Special English. I'm * reporting from the VOA world news headquarters in Washington.
  2. Thousands of Syria's protested across the country Friday and answer to deadly attacks on Thursday that killed at least 55 people in Damascus. Syrian Observatory for human rights said security forces killed at least two people in * Province on Friday. The car bomb explosions Thursday were among a series of attacks that have taken place since UN military observers arrived in Syria as part of a cease fire deal. State television reported Friday that troops killed a suspected suicide bomber in the northern city of *. Report said the attackers car was filled with 1200kg of explosives.
  3. An American soldier has died in eastern Afghanistan after a gunman wearing an Afghan army clothing shop at NATO soldiers. The shooting in kronor province is at least the 15th similar incident of this year. In these incidents, an Afghan soldier or militant dressed as a soldier has fired on coalition forces. A NATO statement said the alliance was investigating the shooting. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. However, that group also claims responsibility for violence in Afghanistan even if it is not involved.
  4. A major flood that is damaged villages in northern Afghanistan killing at least 17 people. The Gov. of * Province said heavy rains caused the flooding late Friday. He warned that more people may have died. At least 20 people are missing. Rescuers were trying to reach the area where many of the flood the roads have been blocked and homes washed away both. The flooded areas can be reached only by air.
  5. Greek political leaders have again failed to form a coalition government. Socialist leader * Venizelos made the announcement Friday after the series of the party refused to join the Socialists and conservatives in forming a government. The Socialists and conservatives want to renegotiate the terms of alone from the European Union and the international monetary fund. But Greek leftists want the loan agreements canceled immediately. If there is no agreement on a coalition government by May 17, there will be new elections.
  6. The Algerian interior minister has declared the ruling party the winner of parliamentary elections held Thursday. Donatus * said the national liberation front won 220 of the 462 seats. This was Algeria's first election since Arab spring opposition activists had urged voters to boycott the election. The Interior Ministry said about 44% of registered voters completed ballots. A coalition of moderate Islamists disputed the results. They claimed widespread election cheating, but European Union election observers said they were only a few problems with the vote. This was the first time election observers have been allowed into Algeria.

  8. The United Nations has published guidelines on what it calls land grabbing which is the buying of a large farm and fishing lands in the developing world by rich countries. Members of the UN committee on world food security supportive the guidelines Friday at a meeting in Rome. The guidelines are not laws they call on governments to protect the legal land rights of community members. The guidelines urge governments to avoid secrecy and corruption in land deals and make sure that land is used responsibly. Human rights groups say large land bodies in Africa and Asia have violated local people's rights and have threatened their food security.
  9. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines on Friday. They were there to show support for their government in a continuing dispute with China involving islands in the South China Sea. Many of them carried signs calling for the Chinese government to pull its ships away from the disputed area called Scarbrough Schroll. Organizers of the protest say they want the international community to help solve the dispute.
  10. And finally at this hour the president of Lithuania has become the first foreign leader to visit the former Ukrainian Prime Minister * in the hospital since she left prison. After the meeting on Friday President * spoke to reporters, she said that what started as a boycott by European leaders of a meeting to be held in Ukraine could become a serious crisis of trust. On Tuesday Ukraine postponed a planned meeting of central and European leaders after about 10 of the leaders cancel to protest the treatment of Ms. *. Ukrainian presidency * is facing growing criticism about the conviction of Ms. * and his government's refusal to let her traveled to Germany for medical treatment.
