  1. It is 23 hours 30 universal time. Here is the news in VOA Special English. I'm * reporting live from Washington.
  2. At least seven people were killed in Syria Saturday in violence linked to anti government unrest. Syrian Observatory for human rights says government raids and heavy weapons killed at least three civilians. The government says four security force members were killed near the capital Damascus named what it is called armed terrorists for the attacks. The deaths came as United Nations military observers traveled across the country. They are watching to see by government and opposition forces follow of cease-fire agreement.
  3. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in cities across Spain on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of economic protests. The main rally happened in Madrid. Protesters are angry about Spain's economic crisis. Government has recently announced new budget cuts and in April. Unemployment was the highest ever recorded. Similar protests have been taking place in other European cities as part of a worldwide day of action organized by the occupied movement.
  4. The president of Greece has called for leaders of the countries political parties to meet on Sunday. The meeting is part of an intense effort to form a new coalition government after recent parliamentary elections. Greek President * said Saturday that he would meet with the Conservative leader. The leader of the leftist party and the Socialist leader. Earlier this week, each party had tried and failed to form a government.
  5. Search and rescue teams have begun recovering the remains of victims of a mysterious and deadly airplane crash in Indonesia. Helicopters said broadly aim to aid in the recovery efforts. The plane crashed into an inactive volcano known as Mount Silerlack on Wednesday. Family members of the victims gathered at the hospital in the capital Jakarta Saturday as the remains of their loved ones arrived in body bags. Cruz says the damage to the victims is so severe that they will have to use DNA to identify the dead. Officials say all of the about 50 passengers probably died in the crash. The plane was almost sales demonstration flight but was expected to last less than one hour before returning to John Lim airport in Jakarta.

Security officials in Pakistan say a roadside bomb hit a police vehicle Saturday killing one officer in the northwestern city of Peshawar. 12 other people were wounded including five police officers. The police official said the vehicle was traveling with another vehicle carrying prisoners from a local police station. Officials said suspects in the attack have been arrested. The Reuters news service reports that the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. The group also attacks police soldiers and other security officials.
  10. The top American commander of the NATO force in Afghanistan has met with Pakistan's army chief to discuss security issues. The Pakistani military said Gen. John Allen flew to * Saturday and met with Pakistani General *. Statement by the military said the meeting was called to discuss operations in border areas and to talk about plans to prevent what it called on toward incidents.

Mitt Romney, the man widely expected to be the Republican Party candidate to compete against President Obama in the presidential election in November received strong support Saturday for defending the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
