Here is the news in VOA Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise reporting from Washington.

The American Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt Romney is campaigning in states he needs to win in November in order to defeat President Obama. Mr. Romney spoke to a group in the southern state of Florida on Friday. He strongly criticized the president. “Almost every measure he described, he has failed to perform upon. And the reason for that is not that he was not trying, in my view, it was he was pulling in the wrong direction. He didn’t know what it takes to actually make the economy work.” Mr. Romney and President Obama appear to have equal support among voters nationwide. Immediately following this news cast our weekly feature IN THE NEWS reports at length on Mr. Romney and the Republican National Convention.

Activists say Syrian rebel fighters have attacked several security centers in the northern city of Aleppo on Friday. They say clashes continued in other areas of the nation. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said one of the attacks in Aleppo resulted in a gunfight. The London-based observatory said several government soldiers were killed and wounded. But it did not provide an exact number.

Officials in Afghanistan say two children have been killed in separate incidents. In the south, officials say the Taliban beheaded a 12-year-old boy on Thursday in Kandahar Province because his brother is a police officer. A spokesman for the Taliban has denied the accusation. And police say a seven-year-old girl was beheaded and her legs were cut-off in her home in the eastern province of Kapisa. The Pakistani Taliban has released a video that shows the heads of 12 soldiers cut-off from their bodies. Reporters who saw the video say they saw the heads on the ground and the soldiers’ equipment nearby. Several militants are standing over the heads. And one of them is holding a large axe. The video was released soon after Pakistani military officials reported 15 soldiers missing after a fight with Taliban militants who crossed into the Bajaur tribal area from Afghanistan. Pakistani officials have not confirmed the identities of the dead soldiers.

A judge in Pakistan has extended the detention of a Christian girl accused of burning pages of the Muslim holy book the Quran. Rimsha Masih could be sentenced to death for the crime. The 14-year-old girl appeared in a court Friday in Islamabad. A judge ordered her to be held for 14 more days. She was detained earlier this month after angry neighbors surrounded her house in Islamabad. They accused her of burning pages containing writings from Nicol Oram. Some people say she was just burning waste papers. Rimsha Masih’s lawyer said he hoped the judge would settle the matter during a hearing set for Saturday. That hearing will decide if she will be temporarily released in exchange for a payment.

People in Angola marked ballots in parliamentary elections on Friday. The voting appeared to go well throughout the day although some problems were reported. The main opposition party UNITA said cheating took place. It said it will try to have the results canceled. Members of Parliament will choose the country’s next president who will serve a five-year term. Early results are expected to be released Saturday and final results should be released next week. The political party of President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos is expected to win easily.

The election for Somalia’s next president has been set for September tenth. The vote by Somali lawmakers will be the next major step in a plan to create a strong central government. The plan is supported by the United Nations. About 60 people say they want to be president including President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. The Parliamentary Committee organizing the vote says it will accept official results from candidates on September third.

Mexico’s top governmental election organization has declared Enrique Pena Nieto the winner of the country’s July first presidential election. The Federal Electoral Tribunal rejected an appeal from leftist candidate Andres Manual Lopez Obrador. Mr. Obrador has accused Mr. Pena Nieto’s Institutional Revolutionary Party or PRI of paying people to vote for its candidates. The ruling by the Electoral Tribunal means Mr. Pena Nieto can begin his six year term on December first.

The head of the American Central Bank says there should be more efforts to help the economy grow. But he did not say when or how such action might be taken. The chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke said he is concerned about unemployment. And he said economic growth is too slow. Some Federal Reserve officials believe more action should be taken to help the economy. They may take that action at the next Federal Reserve meeting in mid-September.

And finally at this hour:

The Sixth World Urban Forum starts Saturday in Naples, Italy. The forum is a United Nations event held every two years. This year, it will consider the growing movement toward urbanization or people moving to cities. About 3,000 participants from 114 countries are expected to attend. The subjects of the meeting are social, economic and environmental issues related to populations moving to large cities.

And now, briefly, here again is the major news of the hour in VOA Special English.

Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt Romney began campaigning Friday in American states he needs to win in November in order to defeat President Obama. The Pakistani Taliban has released a video that shows the heads of 12 soldiers cut-off from their bodies. And Mexico’s top election organization has officially declared Enrique Pena Nieto the winner of the country’s July first presidential election.

That’s the news at this hour. I’m Christopher Cruise reporting from Washington.
