Here is the news in VOA Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise reporting from Washington.

An explosion outside an Islamic center in Syria’s capital on Friday killed five security workers and wounded several others. Syrian state television blamed explosives tied on a motorcycle for the attack at the mosque in Central Damascus. More fighting was reported in other parts of Damascus. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported new clashes between government soldiers and rebels in the city’s Khazas neighborhood. That area is home to the offices of several Syrian security agencies. The Observatory also reported that 45 unidentified bodies were found in two areas near the capital on Friday.

The United States says the Pakistan-based Haqqani Network is a terrorist organization. The decision to place the group on a terrorist list could result in strong financial restrictions against the group by the United States and other countries. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Friday that she had sent a report to Congress explaining why the Haqqani Network should be considered a terrorist organization.

Canada is suspending diplomatic relations with Iran. On Friday the Canadian government said it would close its embassy in the capital Tehran and expel all Iranian diplomats from Canada. Canadian officials said all of its diplomats have already left Iran. Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said his country considers the government of Iran the largest threat to world peace and security. He said Iranian diplomats in Canada must leave within 5 days. He said the decision was based on Iran’s nuclear activities, Iranian military assistance to Syria & its hostility towards Israel.

A Pakistani judge has approved a temporary release from jail of a 14-year-old girl with mental problems. The girl faces blasphemy charges. Her name is Rimsha Masih. She was arrested in Islamabad last month after her neighbors accused the Christian girl of burning pages from Islam’s holy book the Quran. She has been in jail for the past three weeks.

Gunmen in Southeastern Kenya have killed at least 11 people. The killings appeared to be in answer to an attack that is part of a long-time ethnic dispute over land for cattle and water. Kenya’s Red Cross and government officials say fighters from the Orma Community attacked the Pokomo Clan early Friday. The attack took place in the Tana Delta area of Coast Province. Reports say the attack is in answer to a raid in August by Pokomo fighters on an Orma settlement that killed more than 50 people.

In Somalia, candidates for president have been taking turn speaking to Parliament. The 25 declared candidates were given 20 minutes to speak on Friday and Saturday. Somali lawmakers are preparing to elect a new leader for the country. The election is to take place on Monday. The vote is the most recent step in a United Nations-supported plan to create a strong central government in Somalia. The country has not had a central government since 1991.

Chinese state media say at least 64 people are confirmed dead after a series of earthquakes in Southwestern China. The Xinhua News Agency says an earthquake measuring 5.7 and several smaller quakes hit the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou on Friday.

A Lebanese man held in Syria for more than a quarter century has now been released. The man was among hundreds of people who disappeared during Lebanon’s 15-year-long civil war. The VOA’s Steve Ember has more. “Yaacoub Chamoun returned home after spending 27 years in Syrian jails. He is too frightened to talk with reporters in Lebanon. But his release was seen as a sign of hope for families of the missing. That is the term Lebanese used when talking about those who disappeared during the civil war. Ghazi Aad heads an organization called SOLIDE. It works to support the families of the missing. ‘Chamoun came after 27 years to tell us, and to tell those officials, that no, what you are saying is not right. It’s wrong. I’m still alive after 27 years. And yes, there are people. There are Lebanese and Syrians in prisons. They are still alive.’ Ghazi Aad says Lebanese politicians have done little to pressure the Syrian government and simply considered the missing people as dead. Ali Abou Dehn says he was jailed in Syria for 13 years before his release in 2000. He now operates a group called Lebanese Political Detainees in Syria. It is made up of 480 former prisoners. His group says more than 600 Lebanese are being illegally detained in Syrian prisons. Most were taken when Syrian forces occupied Lebanon during its civil war. Ali Abou Dehn says he and his group believe the conflict inside Syria offers the greatest chance yet for other Lebanese to be released. I’m Steve Ember.”

The American economy added 96,000 jobs last month. The number of new jobs is lower than July’s total when 141,000 jobs were added. The Labor Department says the August unemployment rate was 8.1%. That was down from 8.3% in July.

And now, briefly, here again is the major news of the hour in VOA Special English.

An explosion outside an Islamic center in Syria’s capital Damascus killed five security workers Friday. Several others were wounded. The United States has added the Pakistan-based Haqqani Network to its list of terrorist organizations. And in Somalia on Friday, some of the 25 candidates for president began speaking to Parliament. More will speak on Saturday.

And that’s the news at this hour in Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise. VOA News, Washington.
