From Washington, here is the news in VOA Special English.

United States officials say an attack that killed the American ambassador to Libya and three embassy workers in Benghazi, Libya, may have been planned. The officials said the attack on the United States Consulate in Benghazi by a mob armed with rocket-powered bombs appeared to be part of a planned and complex operation. But other US officials said it was too early to know the identities of the attackers. They said it is also unclear if the attack was timed to take place with the 11th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States. Libyan officials said there were two separate attacks that killed ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others in Benghazi. One was on the consulate. The other was on a house where consulate workers had gathered. There was no immediate confirmation of that from United States officials. Many world leaders are condemning the deadly attack on the United States consulate in Libya. Some in the Arab world are criticizing the amateur movie that appeared on YouTube that is blamed for causing the violence. Reports say demonstrators in Libya were angered over a movie supposedly made in the United States which insults Islam’s prophet Mohamed. The demonstrators shot at and set fire to the United States consulate in Benghazi. The ambassador and three embassy workers were killed. Egypt’s Prime Minister denounced the movie, but did not directly talk about the death of the ambassador. Iran demanded an apology to Muslims from President Obama related to the movie. The Saudi-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned both the killing of the ambassador and the movie.

The number of people dead from two factory fires in Pakistan has risen to more than 310. Pakistani officials say at least 289 people were killed Tuesday in a fire at a clothing factory in the southern city of Karachi. Many of the dead were found on the bottom floor of the factory. Police say there were no emergency escapes. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Police said they are searching for the owners of the factory. Also on Tuesday, at least 25 people died after being trapped inside a shoe factory in the Eastern city of Lahore. Pakistani officials blamed power equipment for the fire.

Syrian activists say a car-bomb has killed 18 people in Northern Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the explosion in Idlib Province targeted Syrian soldiers. The new United Nations Arab League diplomat for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, is to travel to Damascus Thursday for a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Mr. Brahimi says his job in Syria will be difficult. He says he will try his best to give as much help as possible to the Syrian people. The UN and Arab League have made no progress on reaching a ceasefire in Syria or on talks on a transitional government. European Union Foreign Policy Chief, Katharine Ashton, says the world has not reached a decision over Syria. She warned of more militancy and violence.

The new president of Somalia was unharmed Wednesday when two suicide bombers attacked the hotel where he was speaking. The visiting Kenyan Foreign Minister was speaking to reporters when a bomb explosion was heard. It was followed by gunfire. A short time later, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud began speaking even as a second explosion was heard outside the hotel. The African Union Force in Somalia says a total of three suicide bombers attacked the Jazeera Palace Hotel in Mogadishu. None of the people inside the building were injured. The AU Force said the three bombers and one of its soldiers were killed. The militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Germany’s top court has rejected attempts to block the creation of a new permanent financial rescue fund for nations using the Euro. The

Federal Constitutional Court
ruled Wednesday that Germany can approve the $644billion-European stability mechanism if it meets certain conditions. They include a limit on how much Germany can give to the fund. German Chancellor Angela Merkel praised the decision as good for Germany and Europe. Germany has Europe’s largest economy. But it has resisted giving additional financial help to debt-troubled members of the 17-member Euro Zone.

Policy-makers at the United States Central Bank are considering more measures to lift the economy. Officials at the United States Federal Reserve started a two-day meeting Wednesday. They plan to announce any actions they may take Thursday. The United States economy is the world’s largest. But it has struggled to recover from the worldwide economic downturn three years ago. The jobless rate has remained above 8% for 43 straight months. Financial experts say they expect the Central Bank to buy large amounts of debt securities or bonds for the third time. They also believe the Central Bank will keep its main interest rate near zero until 2015.

The American technology company Apple has announced the latest version of its popular smart phone the new iPhone-5. The company says the new model is thinner and lighter with a bigger screen than its last model released nearly a year ago. Apple made the announcement at a company news conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

And now, briefly, here again is the major news for this hour.

United States officials say an attack that killed the American ambassador to Libya and three embassy workers in Benghazi Libya may have been planned. Two factory fires in Pakistan have killed more than 310 people. And the new president of Somalia escaped harm Wednesday when two suicide bombers attacked the hotel where he was speaking.

That’s the news in VOA Special English from Washington.
