Here is the news in VOA Special English. I’m Christopher Cruise reporting from Washington.

New protests have been taking place across the Islamic world. The unrest began last week after the release of a video that makes fun of the Prophet Mohammad. On Friday, the protests turned violent in Islamabad and in at least two other Pakistani cities. At least 17 people were killed in clashes between protesters and security officers. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry says it ordered American diplomat Richard Hoagland to the ministry to make what it called a strong protest over the film. The American embassy in Pakistan placed advertisements on Pakistani TV in which President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both denounced the video. Still, American embassies throughout the Islamic world are preparing for protests.

Hundreds of people attacked the base of one of Libya’s strongest Islamic military groups on Friday. The attack happened in the city of Benghazi. The armed men at the base fired into the air to try to force the attackers to leave. But they were unsuccessful and the militants themselves were forced to withdraw from the base with their weapons and vehicles. The base had been surrounded by protesters shouting “No to Militias!” The militant group Ansar al-Shariah is expected of being involved in an attack on September 11th on the American consulate in Benghazi. The American ambassador and three other Americans were killed in the attack. Earlier, thousands of Libyans marched through Benghazi to demand that armed militias disband. They want the government to create a highly-trained police force that would provide security along with the military.

American officials say the Obama Administration is planning to remove an Iranian militant group from its terrorism list. The People’s Mujahedeen Organization of Iran had once been linked to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. A State Department spokeswoman says an announcement will be made sometime before October first. The move will end years of public campaigning by the group. But it is expected to anger the Iranian government. Iran and Iraq considered the People’s Mujahedeen Organization a terrorist group.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says opposition fighters will not win their fight against the government. Mr. Assad said armed groups exercising terrorism against the state are not popular within Syrian society. But, he says, the doors of dialogue remain open. Mr. Assad spoke to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram Al-Araby. His comments came as the Turkish Prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Urgan told the Washington Post that Mr. Assad is politically dead. He said he feels that Iran, China and Russia also believe that Mr. Assad will not last long in office.

You are listening to the news in VOA Special English from Washington.

The Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she is happy that the United States has removed restrictions on her country. She spoke at a news conference at the United Nations in New York City on Friday. She appeared with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moom. Her return to New York City is part of a 17-day visit to the United States. She worked in New York at the UN more than 40 years ago.

Police in South Africa have ordered the arrest of Julius Malema, a strong critic of the government. A lawyer for Mr. Malema says he was told an arrest had been ordered. But he says he does not know what Mr. Malema has been charged with. The former youth leader has supported recent strikes by miners. He has told the miners that President Jacob Zuma and his political party have not supported them.

The United Nations Security Council says it may deploy West African forces to Mali. Mali’s temporary President Diocouda Traore has asked the West African group ECOWAS to send troops to calm the country and retake the north from Islamist extremists. Security Council members said Friday they have what they called a grave concern about human rights violations in Northern Mali. They are also worried about the increasing presence in the area of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and other militant groups. Mali has been in a state of unrest since late March when rebel soldiers overthrew the government.

And finally at this hour, in the United States the Republican Party’s presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife Ann have released their tax documents from last year. The documents showed that the Romneys earned $13,700,000 in 2011. They paid almost $2,000,000 in federal taxes. That is a tax rate of 14.1%. That is a lower rate than the rate that many Americans pay. But most of the Romney’s income was earned through investments. And investments are taxed at a lower rate than are the wages of American workers. Earlier in the year the Romneys released their 2010 tax documents which showed $21.6million in income. They paid about $3,000,000 in taxes. Democrats who support President Obama’s reelection have called on Mr. Romney to release more of his tax documents.

And now, briefly, here again is the major news of the hour read to you in VOA Special English.

New demonstrations have been taking place across the Islamic world to protest a video that makes fun of the prophet Mohammad. Hundreds of people attacked the base of one of Libya’s strongest Islamic militant groups on Friday. The attack happened in Benghazi. The base was surrounded by protesters shouting “No to Militias.” And American officials say the Obama Administration is planning to remove an Iranian militant group from its terrorism list.
