From Washington, here is the news in VOA Special English.

Supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi battled late Wednesday in Cairo with rocks and fire bombs. The fighting comes as three presidential advisors quit to protest the president’s handling of the country’s constitutional crisis. Five of the president’s advisors have quit since November 22nd. VOA correspondent Elizabeth Arrott said the new violence began when Mr. Morsi’s Islamist supporters attacked demonstrators. The demonstrators were protesting what they describe as a presidential power grab. The Muslim Brotherhood had called for a protest in support of Mr. Morsi while his opponents remained in front of the president’s official home.

American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has praised the progress made by the NATO security alliance. Secretary Clinton spoke at what she called her last NATO Foreign Ministers meeting. Mr. Clinton said Wednesday in Brussels that she has spent a lot of time at NATO headquarters during her four years as the top US diplomat. She called it time well spent. Secretary Clinton was at NATO headquarters for two days of talks among the 28 members. She called the alliance which was formed following World War Two one of the world’s greatest forces for security.

The Dutch Coast Guard has begun a rescue operation in the North Sea after two cargo ships crashed off the southern coast of the Netherlands. Reports late Wednesday say Coast Guard officials believe the cargo ship Baltic Ace was sinking some 50km from the Dutch port of Rotterdam. The ship hit a container ship earlier in heavily traveled shipping lanes. A Coast Guard spokesman said crew members from the Baltic Ace were found on four lifeboats. They are being lifted from the sea by helicopters. The 12-member crew of the container ship Corves J remained on the badly-damaged ship. That ship was reported to be in no immediate danger of sinking.

Higher tax rates for the wealthiest Americans and reform of health care spending for the elderly and poor are the key issues in the dispute over government financial policies. President Barrack Obama says he will not agree to a government spending deal at the end of the year without ending a tax-cut for wealthy families. Without a compromise between the administration and Congress, deep government spending cuts and tax increases for most American workers will begin on January 1st. The debate continues daily in Washington as lawmakers and others attempt to avoid a financial crisis.

Thousands of striking workers at the biggest cargo port in the United States returned to work Wednesday. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the agreement to end the week-long strike late Tuesday. The labor unions voted on the deal just as Federal officials arrived in California from Washington to help negotiate an end to the labor dispute. The strike grew after ten thousand workers at the port of Los Angeles and Long Beach refused to load and unload ships. A statement released by the International Long Shore and Warehouse Workers Union said the deal would help prevent the loss of jobs to other states and other nations.

Philippine officials say almost 300 people are known to have died as a result of a typhoon. Rescuers are searching for hundreds of other people believed to be missing. The powerful storm struck the country’s south on Tuesday. At least 142 people died in Compostela Valley on Mindanao Island. Landslides and floodwaters there washed away two emergency shelters and a military camp.

China has received poor marks in a yearly corruption report. Transparency Internationals Index on State Corruption placed China at Number 80 out of the 176 countries where perceptions of official wrongdoing were measured. It ranked 75th last year. The report said China was perceived to be more corrupt than Saudi Arabia, but less than other Communist-ruled countries such as Vietnam and North Korea. Beijing scored 39 out of a possible 100 points in the study. China’s Communist Party has promised to move against official corruption.

A new opinion study finds support is growing in the United States for same sex marriage. Such marriages were legalized by three states in last month’s national election. A Quinnipiac University opinion study released Wednesday shows 48% of voters support same sex marriage. The same study shows that 46% oppose such marriages. That is a change from the Quinnipiac Poll in 2008. That year 55% of those questioned opposed same sex marriages.

The European Union, the United States and 20 other nations are joining to fight the online sale of images of child sex abuse. EU Home Affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom and United States Attorney General Eric Holder announced the world alliance Wednesday in Brussels. Mr. Malstrom said there are an estimated 1,000,000 such images online. Countries taking part in the effort have committed to care for victims, strengthen efforts to charge offenders, reduce online child abuse material and increase children’s awareness of such risks online.

That music is Take Five performed by Dave Brubeck, the Jazz composer and pianist who died of heart failure Wednesday morning at the age of 91. Mr. Brubeck was a music legend for more than a half century. He formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet after World War Two. Many people believe the song Blue Rondo A La Turk from the album Timeout started a new beginning for Jazz. The song combined complex time signatures with classical, Jazz and third world rhythms. The Timeout Album was the first Jazz album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Dave Brubeck, Jazz composer and pianist, dead at the age of 91.
